3 Early Fall Outdoor Activities for Kids to Try this Year

Family

With the pandemic’s strict restrictions becoming looser and kids going back to school one way or the other, parents might realize the little ones missed their entire summer vacation. Since we cannot leave things as they are, as parents, we have to come up with some ideas. Early fall is the perfect time to encourage the little ones to spend as much time as possible in the open air and have some fun. Let’s see three activities to do with the kids outside this time of year and have a blast together until winter sends us inside the house again!

1. Bike Riding and Rollerblading

Cycling and rollerblading are great ways to bond as a family. They’re fun and relaxing, and they leave you tired yet euphoric after. If anyone in the family has a condition that prevents them from doing strenuous activities, look into getting a power-assisted bike or an e-bike for them. This way, they can still enjoy bike rides with the family without exacerbating their condition.

As we all know, the first thing we need to do is to check up the kids’ bicycles, rollerblades (and skateboards, for that matter) and make sure they work correctly. If not, perhaps it’s time to purchase a new bike from an online store or some rollerblades from a website like https://serp.co/best/rollerblades/. Next comes the lessons in bicycle riding safety: the necessity of using helmets and other protective gear, staying away from traffic, following the social distancing rules, wearing equipment that makes them visible, and more. The same goes for rollerblading and skateboarding too.

If your children are still cycling or rollerblading beginners, it is best to accompany them in the park and especially in the streets. The last thing a parent wants is to hear that their kid had a cycling accident, a crash with a stationary object, or an impact with a car in traffic. You might be in your right to file a claim for personal injuries, medical bills, and so on if your child suffers injuries in a bicycle accident. Still, for that, you need a skilled attorney from your state to deal with the legal proceedings, insurance companies, and so on. Establishing liability in bike (rollerblade or skateboard) accidents is a pain. For this reason, safety comes first!

Parents should first consider the National Safety Council’s recommendations on bike safety and even skateboard safety before allowing young kids to ride their wheels on their own. Cycling, rollerblading, and skateboarding are activities you can do in early fall with no stress. Even teens and adults love, so make a family weekend tradition out of them!

2. Picnics

As long as you keep your safe distance from the other families having a picnic in the same area, you should be fine. According to health experts, if cycling and rollerblading are low-risk activities that encourage physical exercise and moving, picnics are low-risk social activities to do. At the same time, there is still a health threat outside.

Since picnics are not only about eating on a blanket the food you made at home, you can try some classic family fun activities that challenge, engage, and entertain young and older children. Here are some suggestions that do not require significant planning, effort, or budgeting from parents’ part:

·         Three-legged race;

·         Balloon toss;

·         A game of “Capture the Flag” if you can split up in teams;

·         Relay races;

·         Yahtzee;

·         Bat and ball games;

·         Board games or card games;

·         All back yard games you can play at home but prefer to play in the park or a large picnic area.

As long as you bring a little playground magic and schoolyard fun in the family field day, everybody will have a blast.

3. Organize a Scavenger Hunt

We are sure you already organized a few of them while you sat at home and tried your best to entertain the children, but now you can do it outside as well. Pick a community park and prepare the hunt in advance. Usually, the best such nature-related challenges include hunting for commonly found nature items in that area and the inclusion of physical activities in the overall experience. When it comes to scavenger hunt ideas for kids to do in a park, your only limit is your imagination.

Just make sure you instruct the kids on safety measures – because accidents can happen in parks too, not only cycling on the street – and health provisions. Other than that, scavenger hunts are the perfect early fall activities for kids to move their bodies, enhance their cognitive abilities, and have fun together with their parents and siblings.

Final Thoughts

What are your favorite early fall outdoor activities with the kids during these troubled times? Parents who own houses and yards fare better in keeping their children active, but what about those stuck in apartment buildings? What do you do to allow your kids to breathe some fresh air, socialize (safely), and have some well-deserved fun?
