4 Curb Appeal Mistakes You Need to Avoid

Family

Everyone knows about curb appeal and the process of making your home look good from the outside, and well, curb side. And there are many different ways you can increase the appeal and value of our home by simply paying attention to a few small details.

But just as there are positive things you need to do to make your home look better from the outside in, there are also a few mistakes you need to avoid so you don’t detract from the value or put off potential buyers from even wanting to set foot inside.

Overgrown Landscaping

Leaving your yard to grow without any care or supervision is a huge no-no as far as curb appeal goes. Overgrown shrubbery, unkempt lawns, etc, all send a message to buyers and people passing by. And that message is one of neglect. If you’re leaving your property to look like this on the outside, what condition is the structure or the internal part of the property in? Even if you have the most spectacular interiors, overgrown landscaping will set the tone for what people expect, and that will be really low.

Peeling Paint or Exterior

Peeling paint on the external walls of your property not only diminishes your home’s aesthetic but also makes it appear neglected. There’s that word again. And if you’re looking to sell, painting the outside walls can be a huge expense you likely don’t want to pay out for, but it can be with the investment. But even if you’re not, peeling paint doesn’t look good, and if it’s the siding on your property that gives out this impression, then you are probably doing more damage to your home by not fixing worn siding. Contact a siding company to discuss your options to see if you need repairs or new siding entirely, or if adding siding can help you improve the look and feel of your home to boost the curb appeal.

Junk

Leaving piles of junk to accumulate outside your home is an eyesore, and it will definitely detract from the impression you’re trying to give out. It might seem the right idea to have things you no longer want or need placed outside of the home, but this pile of belongings that serves no purpose only serves to drag down the property and give people a poor impression of who you are and what you’re about. Think toys, bicycles, leftover parts for repairs, broken down appliances, etc, or even just bags of trash. Remove them from the property and give the entire area a good clean and tidy, and the difference will be significant. Plus, you’ll likely feel much better once it’s taken care of, too.

Nothing

That’s right, absolutely nothing can also detract from your home’s curb appeal. If your property has nothing going on outdoors, no landscaping, just hard surfaces, no character, signs of life, etc, then this too will make people wonder what is appealing about your property, and it won’t give a good first impression. Even if a clean and clear home is the goal, the absence of things like decking, plants, fencing, grass, lighting, etc, will also be a huge negative against the property, and while this might be the look you’re aiming for, if you’re wanting to sell the home its worth adding things a temporary basis, so you need to have well-placed strategic design elements that give the property interest and pleasing focal points.
