Holidays are great. So great, in fact, that some people like to go on holiday more than they like anything else. With the world slowly opening up again, many people are trying to make up for lost time by going on as many holidays as possible. This is great, but there is one downside to holidays: there’s always the little voice in the back of your mind, worrying about your house. Holidays are supposed to be a relaxing time, not a time for stress. But the truth is that many burglaries occur while the homeowners are away. If you want to make your house as secure as possible so that you can get the most out of your holiday, this is the post for you.
Get a security system
There are loads of different types of security systems out there, so no matter what your needs or budget are, you can find one that works for you. Some security systems have cameras, so you can check them now and then to make sure everything is okay. Other systems may alert you as well as your security company if an intruder triggers an alarm so that someone can arrive on the scene, even if you are far away. There are various things to consider when choosing a home security system, so be sure to do some research before you make a final decision.
Hire a house sitter
The reason that burglaries are so common when people are on holiday, is because there is a much lower risk of getting caught if you try to break into an unoccupied house, as opposed to a house with someone in. One simple way to fix this is to hire a house sitter. This is someone who will live in your house for the duration of your holiday. It’s a win-win: they get paid for an easy job, and you get to enjoy your holiday – whether it’s a city holiday one hour away or an island holiday far away.
Make it look like someone is home
If you can’t get a house sitter to actually be in your home, there is an alternative: make it look like someone is home. Various things make us think people are home: newspapers being there in the morning and gone by the afternoon, a parked car, lights on inside the house. . . you get the idea. Get a dog
Look, nothing sends burglars running as fast as hearing a big dog barking. And if big dogs aren’t your style, little dogs will also do the trick. Your dog doesn’t necessarily have to scare the burglar away, they just need to bark enough to attract attention, since that’s what burglars try to avoid. Dogs can sense intruders, so they may be able to raise a racket that’s loud enough to attract the neighbors. Just be sure you have someone to give your dog food and water, as well as attention, while you’re away.
