4 Ways To Build Trust With Your Dog

Family

Any seasoned dog owner can relate to the importance of building trust with your canine friend. According to a study, 69% of Americans have at least one pet, with many considering them a part of their family. So like many close relationships, bonding, respect, communication, and protection are crucial. How do you build these with your canine buddy? Below are four things you can do to communicate and build trust with your furry pet.

  • Communicate clearly

Spend time together

Relationships involve being present and sharing experiences. So like you do for your human relationships, it would be best if you did the same for your dog by spending time together. There should be a certain period daily where your pet receives your utmost attention. This means staying away from social media, texting, chatting, or indulging in any activity that may take your attention from the dog. This will help build an emotional connection between you. You can also take a hike, go for a walk or engage in some activity you and your canine partner enjoy.

Provide enough security

Your dog requires the same level of protection and security that you and the other individuals in your life require. Never pass up an opportunity to show that you are aware of and responsive to its requirements. For instance, your furry friend should understand that food and water are always accessible and that you will always provide for their needs. They will feel well-protected when you provide a clean and safe environment for them. In return, they would go out of their way to defend you just as you do for them.

Enjoy the bonding process

A natural relationship will grow when you consistently apply your dog’s trust-building techniques. The need to feel loved and safe is something that all living creatures share. You will fully understand why the expression “man’s best friend” was born when you build this atmosphere for you and your dog. Remember that the animal is a trusted member of your family. Therefore, cherish the relationship you create together, and it will sense the affection and adoration and return it often.

Communicate clearly

Confusion and misunderstanding are common in most relationships, so communicating with your dog as clearly as possible is essential. This means maintaining consistency in your puppy training. Dogs learn visual cues much faster than vocal ones, so experts advise using the former. Your canine buddy will pay more attention to your actions than what you say, so always watch your actions when communicating with them. Being inconsistent and unpredictable with your pet can harm your relationship and trust. On the other hand, you and your dog will feel much closer when you two know what to expect from each other.

Dogs are great companions, and many people realized this during the lockdown. Spending time with your pups will always give you something to laugh or cheer about. However, it is best to consider the above tips to build communication and trust with your dog.
