5 Changes That Could Help You Have The Best Night’s Sleep Ever

Family

Few things are nicer than waking up after having had the most amazing night’s sleep. You feel well-rested, energized, and ready to take on whatever the day decides to throw your way. The trouble is that for many, those nights either don’t exist or are few and far between.

If you struggle to get to sleep, stay asleep, or don’t feel like your slumber is as comfortable as it could be, there are lots of things you can do to make it better. Here are 5 changes that could help you have the best night’s sleep ever.

Create a bedroom that feels calm and relaxing

A well-presented, welcoming room could make a huge difference in how well you sleep. If your room is filled with clutter or is untidy, it’s unlikely to make you feel relaxed. Spend some time getting rid of any belongings you no longer need and re-organize the things you intend to keep. Make sure clothes are hung up, and make your bed every morning. It will make your room seem far more welcoming, and you will look forward to getting into bed each night.

Decorate your bedroom in colors that promote a feeling of calm and add accessories to compliment your scheme. The nicer and quieter your room, the more likely you are to de-stress, and the easier it will be to drift off into a deep sleep.

Is your mattress comfortable?

The quality of your mattress can play a huge part in how well you sleep each night. It is recommended that you replace your mattress every ten years, so if yours is older than that, it might be worth looking into getting a new one. A mattress should be comfortable as well as supportive, and assuming you choose the right mattress, can also help to alleviate joint pain.

If you are unsure of the mattress that may be best suited to your needs, visit your local bed store and talk to a bed specialist. They will ask you some questions, let you try a few, and help you to choose the correct firmness. Many people prefer pocket sprung mattresses while others opt for memory foam, so given the number of options available, it’s important to take time over your decision.

Choose the right bedding

It’s not just your mattress that can change the quality of your sleep. Your choice of bedding can also play a major role. How many times have you woken up during the night drenched in sweat or feeling uncomfortably hot? Using breathable bedding such as Supima cotton sheets will help to keep you cool throughout the night.

Similarly, your duvet can make all the difference when it comes to a night of good sleep. Too heavy and it could be uncomfortable, whereas a lighter tog may cause you to wake up feeling cold. If you aren’t sure which is best, an all-seasons duvet may be your best option.

If you don’t feel your pillows are providing you with enough neck support, it might be worth buying new ones. They are fairly inexpensive but could help to vastly improve your sleep.

Switch off gadgets

Using tablets or mobile phones before bedtime isn’t a good idea, so if your current bedtime routine involves watching YouTube or catching up on the latest Facebook gossip, it could be time to stop.

Online interaction stimulates your brain, which makes you more alert and thus makes it more difficult to get to sleep. Settling down with a good book is a great alternative, or why not listen to an ASMR podcast? It could help you drift off to sleep feeling relaxed and free of stress.

Avoid too much water and caffeine

Being woken from the best sleep of your life because you need to go to the toilet is extremely frustrating. If you constantly wake because of this, it may be that you are drinking too much before bed. Drinking water is important and very good for you, but it’s a good idea to stop around an hour before you intend to go to sleep.

Caffeine is a stimulant, so although you might enjoy a nice cup of coffee before bed, its not a good idea if you want to have an amazing sleep. If you want a hot drink in the evening, have fruit tea or a glass of warm milk instead. Stick with coffee, and you might find yourself counting sheep until the early hours.
