5 Signs Your Roof Needs Attention Pronto

Family

The roof is one of the most important parts of the home’s structure and safety. It is the primary defense against the elements outside, and also takes on the brunt of the punishment from rain, snow, wind, and more. As much as we may depend on a good roof, it can experience issues as a result, but often, they’re easy to miss because our attention isn’t focused upwards that often. Here, we’re going to look at five of the signs you should be mindful of to ensure that you’re not letting it approach the point of collapse without noticing.

Water Stains And Damp Patches Indoors

If you see a water stain on the ceiling or walls, then the roof issues are the most likely cause. When shingles are missing, it leaves the underside of the roof exposed to the rain, which can allow water to penetrate deeper into the home, eventually causing water damage. Treat this sign as an urgent call to action, as water damage can very quickly get expensive.

Missing, Cracked, Or Curling Shingles

Take the time to inspect the roof from the outside. If you’re able to see any damage to your shingles, even if they’re still in place, you should call a roofing professional. If they’re damaged, they might already be exposing the underside of the roof, or they could be much more easily lifted when the next storm rolls by. If you’re not able to check the roof yourself, getting the professionals out at least once a year should help you stay on top of things.

Granules In Your Gutters And Downspouts

You should clean your gutters twice a year, before the fall and after the winter. This helps prevent debris from building up and causing blockages. However, if you notice any dark, sandy granules in those gutters or at the bottom of the downspouts, then the material that makes up your shingles might be failing, which means that you should start saving up for a complete roof replacement.

Sagging Rooflings Or Uneven Sections

Another sign of damage in need of crucial and urgent repairs is if your roof looks like it’s beginning to sag or dip in sections. This could be due to moisture trapped beneath, rotting beams, or other structural issues. Either way, it might not be too long before a collapse. You may be able to repair the structure beneath to save the roof, but just as often, you might have to replace it.

A Sudden Spike In Energy Bills

The symptoms of roof issues do show up in other ways, too. This can include feeling drafts in the home that can’t be traced to the windows or unexpected increases in your energy bills. Compromised roofs cause the heat to escape even faster than broken window seals, as heat travels upwards. Similarly, poor insulation can cause the home to get hotter in the summer, as well.

Try to be more cognizant of your roof during your life as a homeowner. It can help you prevent some very costly repairs indeed.
