Most parents of teens do not believe their children take drugs. But most of those parents would be wrong. Many teens, and rarely younger kids, will experiment with drugs. That is to say, they may try them. Unfortunately, sometimes, once is all it takes to become addicted, experience severe medical issues, and even death.
You may want to figure out how your teenager is getting drugs before looking into rehab for teens. Knowing where and what tactics your child uses to obtain drugs can be helpful to stop them.
Here are 5 tactics teenagers use to obtain illicit drugs:
1. At Home
It may be surprising to find out that your teen is stealing prescription drugs from your medicine cabinet, but it is the most common way kids can get drugs for cheap, or free. Unused medication should always be disposed of through the proper channels. There are many local places that will take unused prescriptions, as well as a national company that you can send them to. Do not flush or dispose of in the trash as this can be dangerous for fish and other wildlife.
2. Close Friends
Some teens will fall under peer pressure, especially from a close friend. They don’t want to be left out or be bullied for not going along with the crowd. The best way to help your child is to make sure they can talk to you. Come up with a way they can safely get out of trouble at a party or other place. For example, calling or texting you a secret code that translates into you making up an emergency that they need to head home immediately.
3. Social Media
Unfortunately, nearly all teens are on some type of social media. This type of communication platform is highly influential when it comes to your child wanting to fit in and belong. Those kids that participate in taking drugs may post photos of their activities and ask their friends to do the same. Of course, it is not always as easy to decline in person as it is on social media.
4. Internet Drugstores
There are thousands and thousands of online drugstores and medication websites located around the world. Many will not check to see if the person ordering the drugs is over 18 years of age, or even if the prescription they are submitting is valid. These types of online retailers are only interested in making money and will ship drugs to almost anyone.
5. Dark Web
It has been said that you can find anything and everything on the dark web. This includes illegal drugs. Not only are the drugs sold in this particular manor illegal, but they could also be highly dangerous. There is no way to tell what ingredients are within these drugs, even if they are labeled. Do you really think someone selling illegal drugs on the dark web will be honest about what components are within their drugs?
The key to raising a drug-free child is communication. The sooner you talk with your child about the harmful effects of drugs, and how much you as their parent care and are there for them, the better chances they will avoid drugs.
