5 Things to Do First Thing When Moving Into a New Home
Whether you are moving across town or moving long distance, things can quickly get confusing and it’s easy to forget the things you need to get done first when moving into a new home. That is why many people put together a checklist of things that they need to do before and after they move into a new place, whether they are renting or buying the property. With that in mind, read on below for a few of the things you need to put on your checklist.
Check into Insurance
When you are buying a house knowing that you need homeowners insurance is pretty much a given. Many renters don’t think about insurance, however. One of the first things you should do when moving into a new location is to check out the prices on renters insurance, in this way the contents of the home will be covered should anything happen.
Change Out the Locks
Whether you’re buying a home or renting, you have no idea who could have a key to the house. That is why it’s so important to make sure you change the locks, even before you spend the first night in your new home. In this way, you’re secure in the knowledge that you’re the only person who has a key to the front, back, and even the garage door of your house. This will go a long way towards helping you feel secure in the knowledge that your family is protected from harm.
Sequester Your Pets
Moving can be hard and even terrifying to your pets, so sequestering them for the first couple of days is a great idea. Make sure that you bring their favorite toys and their bed with you on that first night, so they can feel as comfortable as possible in their new home. Keeping them away from the noise and confusion of moving will go a long way towards helping them adjust to the new house as soon as possible.
Plug in the Fridge
While this may seem to be a no-brainer, you would be surprised at how many people forget to plug in the fridge on their first night in a new house. If you haven’t bought groceries yet, it can be easy to forget. Plugging it in and letting it get cold will not only get it ready for when you go shopping but give you a heads up if it isn’t working properly as well.
Get Out and Meet the Neighbors
While this isn’t as common as it used to be, getting to know your neighbors is something you should do first off when you move to a new location. It’s important to know who you’re living around, and besides, it’s better to not look snooty don’t you think? Humor aside, making friends and acquaintances will help you to find the essentials for a happy life in your new neighborhood, like the best pizza, the best coffee, etc.
These are a few of the first things you should do when moving into a new home. Remember, get out there and meet the neighbors, after you plug in the fridge, of course.
