It might not have quite the reputation of London, but few would disagree that Liverpool is still one of the best cities to make a long weekend out of.
Once the European Capital of Culture, Liverpool has undergone huge regeneration over the decades and offers plenty to do for a weekend, or even longer if your time allows.
It is also more set up for tourists than you may initially think. For example, it is not uncommon to get a train to Liverpool Lime Street, use a Liverpool local storage facility for your luggage, and then venture around the various tourist hotspots. In other words, this is a city that does work from a ‘flying visit’ perspective as well.
In terms of what you can do on your long weekend Liverpool getaway, let’s now take a look at some of the main attractions.
The Beatles Story
If you’re a fan of the Fab Four, then you can’t come to Liverpool without visiting the Beatles Story.
Located in the Albert Dock, this is a must-visit attraction for any Beatles fan.
The museum is split into two parts. The first is a recreation of the Cavern Club, where the Beatles played their first gig. The second part is an interactive museum, which takes you through the career of the band.
The museum is a great way to learn about the history of the band, and the interactive elements make it interesting for the kids as well.
Liverpool Cathedral
If you are a fan of architecture, then you will love Liverpool Cathedral. The external elements of the building are stunning, and the interior is just as impressive.
The Cathedral is Anglican and sits across two sites. The main Cathedral is on Hope Street, but you can also visit the Lady Chapel at the Metropolitan Cathedral which is a short distance away.
The Cathedral has an incredible history, which is well worth learning about and has been used as a hospital during WWI, and an air raid shelter during WWII.
Liverpool Walker Art Gallery
The Walker Art Gallery is an incredible free art gallery, which holds exhibitions from various artists. It also has a great collection of Impressionist art.
The gallery is located in the city centre, which is easy to get to and is also next to Liverpool Central Station.
The main collection is displayed in the Centenary Building, along with various temporary exhibitions held through the year.
The Liverpool Film Studios
The Liverpool Film Studios are another great place to visit if you are a fan of TV and film. The city has been used for a large number of films and TV shows including The Iron Lady, Harry Potter, and Peaky Blinders over the years, so offers something a little bit special for any movie enthusiasts out there.
With guided tours available across the city, you can take a look around the studios and see some of the sets used in some of your favourite shows.
