But, when Mr. SMSL and I went shopping last week to finish our Christmas shopping, it wasn’t all gumdrops and rainbows. Here’s the story from the beginning! I had gift cards I have been saving from blogging to spend on something that I needed or wanted. I had $225 saved up, and I had a good idea of what I was going to buy before I even walked into the store. I went in, walked around because you never know when something will catch your eye.
So, the first thing that made it into my cart was the Sony Headphones for under $10. Mr. SMSL is a headphone guy and needed a new pair, so Santa is going to deliver those into his stocking. The second item I added was the Platinum Plus Aluminium Tripod so that I can take my pictures to the next level. Mr. SMSL and our daughter bought me an awesome camera a few years ago, and it was something I wanted to add to it. So now came the big decision, item number 1 or item number 2, so I went and looked at them both, and made by decision.
Well, the decision I made was the Acer 11.6 Chromebook. Why you ask? Because my laptop is a 17 inch laptop which is wonderful for working at home, but not so nice when traveling, especially flying. So, the first person asked me if I needed help, and I told them yes, I wanted this laptop. There wasn’t any on the shelf, and they took off in an effort to find one. They came back empty handed and no real solution. So, I noticed that they had a “floor model” marked down from $169.00 to $162.00 but it was missing cords.
Not exactly the ideal situation, but one I could quickly rectify by ordering a cord online, minus I didn’t know what exact cord I needed. So, in comes helpful blue shirt #2, after explaining the situation he went to talk to the “manager”. After their conversation we went on a wild goose chase to find a “replacement” cord that they would throw in, if I bought that computer. Ok, that is a fair plan, but we didn’t get to far. We couldn’t find one that would work, he tried for about a 2 second period (probably longer but he didn’t really try, in my opinion.) He claims he is going to go and talk to the manager again, great, maybe we will get an answer.
I’m waiting, looking, waiting, looking, made a decision to go and look at item #2 on my list while he “looks”. It is obvious that he or the manager aren’t coming back anytime soon. Fast forward through 2 more blue shirt employees who “try” to find a cord, laptop or a solution I’m done. I’ve been in the store for an hour and a half, have half a dozen things in my cart I wasn’t even sure of any more and am just beat.
So, here comes blue shirt number #4 and get’s me the items I wanted for my #2 item. But I’m not happy with my decision, at ALL! I’m finally starting to admit a little bit of defeat and turn the corner to head to the check out and Blue shirt #5 appears. Did I need any help? So, I proceeded to tell him my long drawn out version of the last hour and a half. You know the kind of story, I’m done, this is stupid, for customer service your co-workers suck, you know the I’m over it all story. He tells me to explain to him what I wanted exactly. Deal!
So I covered the entire story again, I wanted the Acer 11.6 Chromebook, but they didn’t have one in stock. The “manager” was going to throw in a $50 cord to make it work, if we could find the cord to go with it. Then, the lightbulb went off in my head. If they were going to spend $162 + $50 in cords they were loosing money, so I proposed that they give me the $249 computer for the $169 price. Because from a business perspective it would cost the same amount or close to the same amount as what they had been “trying” to do for the last hour and half.
The computer I walked out of the store with was the Samsung 11.6 Chromebook for the same price as the Acer model. It was originally $249.00 and I got it for the $169.00 price because of all of the trouble I had had in the store. They truly do believe in great customer service!! So the next time you head to Best Buy in St. Joseph, MO skip all of the blue shirts and get Tyler because he made it all possible. Or if he isn’t there ask for Trevor because they both went above and beyond to make sure I was a satisfied customer.
It wasn’t until I got home and looked at my receipt that I noticed that everything I had bought had a discount on every item I had purchased. Which makes me even happier to stand behind Best Buy!!
