Cooking and Creating: 4 Ways to Get Our Kids Into the Kitchen More

Family

Of the things we need to teach our kids, cooking or baking are two of the most critical skills. We want our children to be self-sufficient, and as difficult as it can be to make time for our family because of so many different tasks in life, we must spend time focusing on getting our children acquainted with the kitchen. So with this in mind, what can you do to get your kids into the kitchen more?

Get Them Involved in Baking Things

Baking is the best way to get your children into the kitchen, not just because it helps them to become acquainted with ingredients, but it helps them to make something that they are invested in, and therefore, they would be more inclined to eat it at the end of the process! This recipe for shortbread cookies by Preppy Kitchen is a fantastic place to begin because it’s simple to make, and only has a handful of ingredients, but it’s also guaranteed to find its way to your children’s stomachs.

Take Them to the Store With You

We must educate our children about nutrition, and when we have our children with us, they can learn more about the additional value of vegetables, and they will be more inclined to eat if they put it on something like a pizza. In addition to this, you can take them to the store and help them to feel part of the entire cooking process. When you allow them to pick up ingredients off the shelves you’re going to encourage them to start thinking about combinations of ingredients that will go well together, but more importantly, find the things they want to eat and will enjoy. The final piece of the puzzle is to bring them back to the kitchen so you can prepare everything together.

Instill Good Habits

Getting our children into the kitchen is not just so they can become more self-sufficient, but when you let your children help you in the kitchen, it is teaching them those valuable life skills, but also the opportunity to teach them about every little thing involved in the cooking process, including tidying after themselves. If you are someone who cannot bear the sight of a messy kitchen, you must remember that this is a sacrifice that will make your kids more resilient adults!

Let Them Follow Their Passion

There will be times when your children want to make things according to color. If they want to make macaroni cheese because it is yellow they may think that mustard is the thing that adds the flavor, and it’s critical that we gently nudge them in the right directions and have the ingredients in front of them, but we also must help them to follow their nose and embrace passion. When it comes to flavors, there’s a lot that we can do to integrate things. Of course, apples and cheese go well together, and if you really want your children to start becoming more involved in the kitchen, passion is pivotal.
