Everyone wants their yards to look immaculate, but that can take a lot of work. With the risk of being outside for so long and getting sunburned, more and more homeowners are looking for new ways to make their yard appear perfect without having to put in so much work. Here are seven types of low-maintenance grasses to try out.
1. Zoysia Grass
Once you add Zoysia grass to your yard, you’re probably going to confuse it with Artificial Turf because of how easy it is to take care of. It can grow in a wide variety of conditions because it has a deep root system that doesn’t require a lot of watering. And these deep roots minimize the chances of weeds being able to settle in your yard too. It works well in warm areas, including sandy soil, and needs 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
2. Blue Grama
Blue Grama is also a warm-season grass that is also quite drought tolerant. When left to grow tall, it needs even less watering because the tight weave helps to retain water. It also works well when mixed in with other grass, if you’re looking for a variety in your lawn that is still both beautiful but also low-maintenance.
3. Buffalo Grass
Buffalo grass flourishes quite well with very little rainfall. Keep in mind that it does lose its colour during the winter months or when rainfall is less than 1.5 inches per month. However, it does have the benefit of growing quite low, so that there’s is less need to mow on a regular basis.
4. Bahiagrass
Bahiagrass is known to thrive well in poor soil conditions, making it great for those who don’t want to spend the time adding fertilizer to their yards. Despite being able to grow in these condition, it is not very resilient in other growing conditions since it prefers acidic soil to anything else.
5. St. Augustine Grass
St. Augustine Grass doesn’t actually need a lot of mowing, so you can spend more time tending to the other areas of your garden that need it. However, it does need good drainage so you shouldn’t have soil that a lot of water is going to sit on top of. It does need regular fertilization too in the spring, but otherwise, it pretty much takes care of itself.
6. Fescue Grass
If you’re looking for a grass that is both low maintenance and also works well in shady yards, then you might want to consider Fescue grass. it’s pretty resilient to cold winters, but also tolerates heat well, just as long as it gets enough water. It grows quite slow, meaning that you can spend less time mowing.
7. Bermuda Grass
Bermuda grass is capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic, so you won’t have to worry about your lawn ever looking flat. It’s pretty resistant to droughts, but it does require some watering on occasion if the atmosphere gets too dry. The upside is that it grows pretty slow so it doesn’t need a lot of mowing.
