We always like to head outdoors in the summer, but when it comes to having kids, responsibilities, and work, sometimes you just want to sit down and watch a movie. Here are some great tips to create the perfect summer movie night!
Take it Outdoors
Most houses have electrical outlets outside their homes. If you want to make movie night something special, pick up the TV and head outside for a “drive-in” movie night. You can, also, get a portable projector to enjoy those summer movies. Pick a theme and go with it! We have done Zootopia, Beauty and The Beast, Bambi, and Jungle Book to name a few. Each one is as unique as the first one and they are always so much fun.
Have a Test Run
Have a test run to make sure all of your equipment is set up right and ready to go before show time. There is nothing worse than being unprepared or having the wrong cord. I had my movie set up the night before to make sure that we were good to go, which was a good thing that we did because the cord we had was the wrong one for my phone.
Make Ice cream Sundaes
When it comes to hot nights, ice-cream sundaes can make the perfect cool treat for a movie night. Get creative with your ice-cream treats and make your own homemade ice-cream, or add topping you have never tried before.
Get Comfy
Whether you head outside or decide to stay in, get out the comfy blankets, pillows, and PJs. Movie night is a time to be comfy and enjoy the show. So, get comfy and settle in for a great movie night with the family.
Pull Movies from a Hat
Instead of everyone arguing on what movie they want to watch, have each person choose 2 movies, write them down, and put them in a hat. Draw out two movies to watch for movie night. Whatever gets drawn is what you watch without any complaints.
Movie Challenge
After you have watched some awesome movies together, have a movie challenge. Break up into teams or be your own individual team. Find some trivia questions and see what everyone remembers from the movie. This is a fun way to make sure everyone is on their phones and paying attention.
Keep All Your Outdoor Movie Theater Stuff Together
I learned this lesson the hard way when I had to purchase a new cord because I couldn’t find one that worked with the speaker. While it isn’t the end of the world, I quickly decided that a plastic storage tote would be perfect to store things in that we needed for each movie night.
Many communities have local movie nights at the park. For an even better time, look into community movie nights. What other ideas do you have for making your movie night perfect? Share some tips in the comments below!

This is one of our favorite Disney movies! This is so romantic- and a great way to open the doors of our minds to dream! And that you can’t judge a book by its cover. It’s what’s inside that counts! This would make a great feature film for family night at the movies! I love the Rose jewelry box toy!
I also used to love The Beauty and she Beast television show.
