Director Peter Docter & Producer Jonas Rivera
*Disclosure: I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the coverage of several press events for Disney, Pixar and Google. All opinions are 100% my own.
Setting down to interview directors and producers is one of my favorite types of interview situations. They are always inspiring, candid and of course proud of their movie they have worked on for so long. Each movie is a masterpiece and they should all be proud of their hard work. While in San Francisco earlier in October we had a chance to sit down and interview Director Peter Docter & Producer Jonas Rivera that worked together on Inside Out.
One of the first questions we asked the duo was if there was going to be a second Inside Out. They answered with they are proud of Inside Out and they spent five years of their lives working on it. The world and characters came to be after they finished up the movie Up and they are equally as proud of that one. But when they are done with one movie their focus shifts to imagining more adventures in a new world. While they admit that Inside Out has an open endedness to it, they think they are leaning toward creating something totally new. They already have new ideas but will never say never to which we told them we wanted another Inside Out. We will see which direction they take in about 5 years is my guess.
Coming up next for Pixar includes A Good Dinosaur which they are in high gear for and they say it looks fantastic from what they have seen. We saw a 30 minute preview and I can’t wait to watch it. Then after that they have Finding Dorie but admitted that there are seven or eight in various stages of development and production. But the pair is  in very, very early development doing some research on some ideas.
Just like our daily lives the emotions we feel change and sometimes we feel as if we have no control of our emotions. However, when we asked what character that they most resonate with they answer was Joy most of the time but Anger also. Pixar is a great place to work and they both think they have the greatest jobs in the world. I would have to agree that they do have some pretty amazing jobs!
They are both in awe that Inside Out it is famous around the world and the success is in part to emotions being such a universal idea. “Everybody has the same emotions. So we were hoping that it’s a fairly universal idea.”-Peter Docter The control room or headquarters was one of the first things they worked on. Because they knew that it was going to be a focal point in the movie so to speak. There are different regions of the brain and they each play their own roll in the movie as well as in our day to day lives.
Bing Bong is one of my personal favorite characters and little did I know why until we sat down with these two. That the struggle as parents is that we don’t want our child(ren) to grow up because they need to stay little. It’s uncomfortable and difficult and Bing Bong brings the childhood joy back to life and is exciting. Voiced by Richard Kind Bing Bong ends up giving himself up in the end to help Riley succeed. Which is pretty ironic that as parents that is kind of what we do for our kids.
The most challenging part of Inside Out was the story because it’s not straightforward. The problem is  you’re making it your realizing all these things that you got wrong and having to correct it before it happens. Joy was a hard character to crack because they didn’t want her to be annoying throughout the movie. They credited Joy’s success to the actress Amy Poehler because she helped unlock the full potential of Joy throughout the movie and ended up being happy 100% of the time. But the final cast was what tied the movie together and helped make it the successful movie that it is.Â
Be sure you pick up your own copy of Inside Out on November 3rd! I promise you will love it as much as I did!
