Disney Pirate Fairy Interviews
Disney Pirate Fairy Interviews!!
My Los Angeles trip was fun filled from the time I arrived in the city of Poppies and until I left. I was able to see The Muppets Most Wanted and walk the red carpet, tour the set of The Middle, interview lots of great talent as well as see the Pirate Fairy. After our private screening of The Pirate Fairy we had the chance to interview Peggy Holmes who is the director as well as Jenni MaGee-Cook who is the producer. It was a very fast paced 20 minutes and I couldn’t believe how much fun they were to talk too! They both have a special connection to The Pirate Fairies as well as Peter Pan and I loved how it showed when talking to us about the movie.
The Pirate Fairy is a movie that both boys and girls will love and that is just one of the reasons that I thought it was a great movie. But I don’t want to go into all of the details because my official review will go up next week. One of the questions that is always most intriguing to us is how the casting happens when it is such a hit as well as great film. The fairies include the main characters who are Tinker Bell, Silvermist, Rosetta, Iridessa,  Fawn and Vidia and they were cast from the beginning. But then Jason Henkel the casting director got busy getting Christina Hendricks as well as Tom Hiddleston that were actually both number one picks as to who they wanted as part of this great movie. Getting the top picks for the movie is amazing, unusual and incredible because that doesn’t happen everyday in show business!Â
Christina Hendricks had to play a seven inch fairy who fought pirates so she had to be sweet as well as vulnerable Zarina who quickly became one of the main characters of the time. Because Christina has a love for Disney as well as a big range of acting they knew from the start that she would be the perfect fit and now that she is a Disney legend you can see just how great she is at her job..
Tom Hiddleston was also the first choice and he did a fabulous job during the whole movie. Because Tom is what they described as a “Triple Threat” he was perfect for the roll, he can sing, dance and act which is perfect for his character who is cabin boy James. Because Tom understood that Hook is a bigger than life character and he was a completely believable villian back in the day. Tom Hiddleston also gives us glimpses into Hook and how he isn’t as bitter as he was in Peter Pan just yet. He is super charming, loyal and very unassuming which allows him to play the part perfectly.
Because they wanted Zarina to make a mistake and run away from home but wasn’t sure where she was going to go because they live in Neverland. But in true Disney fashion she had to come back home because she has a huge heart and Tinker Bell has lived this story before in Peter Pan as you know. But it wasn’t until they were in a writers meeting with John Lasseter that the idea finally hit him as to where Zarina was going to go. He hit his fist on the table, and said “pirates” she could run away and get hooked up with the pirates, the pirates of Neverland.” Which then allowed the whole story to come into place with the crocodile, Captain Hook and of course the legacy of Peter Pan to be shown in this great film.
That day was the day that the film started taking shape and getting Captain Hook in on the action to get Zarina to do something she shouldn’t, but be able make her redeemable as well. But they wanted to show the Legacy of Peter Pan and introduced which is where Tick Tock Crock came in as well as Hook. The Pirate Fairy Film was actually made in fifeteen months which is an incredibly fast project. Because the story was in place and Peggy had a really clear idea for the emotional track Zarina would take and it just worked out perfectly.
Actor Jim Cummings plays two pirates, Oppenheimer which is the little old guy as well as Port the big round guy. He is an amazingly talented voice-over actor because he is just part of classic Disney. All of the pirates sang their own songs and each brought their personality to the character which allows the audience to hear and feel the characters. While visiting the Disney Toons Studio this is one of the pictures that we could take pictures of, so I’m glad that I have all of their names with their pictures!
Pirate Fairy Costumes
We even got the details on the Pirate Fairy Costumes which was a fun thing to learn. For example, Zarina’s sword is a hatpin, belt is a watchband and of course they are from the turn of the century. She even had a Mackin ring on with her long boots and a classic pirate feel with a hip and contemporary flare which is nothing short of amazing. The materials were all organic so that they draped, folded and hung correctly and merged both eras correctly.
Hidden Items in Pirate Fairy
Hidden Items in Pirate Fairy include the tick, the tick tocks is the original sound from Peter Pan which is cool. On the clock there are initials that are actually Peggy Holmes’ son’s initials on it. The cigar box that Zarina uses to filter blue dust has Jenny’s daughter’s name on it which is Gabriella. As well as Treasure Island was in the movie so they did an excellent job of hiding things in this Disney film as always. I’m sure that there are more but these were just the highlights.
Â
Because both boys and girls alike love Peter Pan and of course Tinker Bell bringing the fairies back into their lives was a great accomplishment. The Pirate Fairy has been a hit with boys and girls alike, but one thing has held true to Hook. Hook is discovered in the movie at different times in the stories as well as scenes. For myself, I had an idea during most of the movie, but when he put the hat on I knew that Hook had made his “official” appearance. But when the hook is on at at the end of the movie it was like the circle had been completed. Making this movie great for boys and girls wasn’t a goal that they were trying to accomplish, it just was the making of the greatest story you can that lead that to happen.
Because there are so many fairies it is very possible that there will be spin offs allowing for new movies to be in production. But because it is a director driven studio the story has to be on the table, but the dynamic duo did tell us that they are in production of the next fairy film!!
The Pirate Fairy will be released on April 1, 2014 so be sure you pick up your copy!! I promise that both boys and girls alike will love this great film.
Be sure to follow Tinker Bell on Facebook, Twitter, and check out the official website!
