Donut Day
Happy Donut Day!! There is a lot of good memories behind donuts for me. So today I’m going to tell you a little bit about some of the best donuts I remember eating growing up. As well as where you can get some of the best donuts ever in Northern Missouri.
As a kid I great up with Bell’s Diner in Trenton, Missouri and she made the best homemade donuts ever. I don’t remember what year she closed the doors but I do remember being a heartbroken little girl. Bell was always there with a smile on her face and served up some of the best donuts ever. Maybe someone in her family has her secret recipe that they would be willing to share. (A girl can hope, right?)
After the closing of Bell’s the next best place to get a donut was Trenton Hy-Vee. Yes, they are still going strong and make donuts daily in a wide variety of flavors. The best memories of getting donuts was on Saturday mornings when we were going to local garage sales to find the best bargains. We would all get donuts and mom would buy a gallon of chocolate milk. Then we would share the chocolate milk, straight from the jug and there were 4 of us kids that just drank straight from the jug. Those were some of the best memories that we made growing up. Thank goodness for donuts and chocolate milk on those long Saturday mornings!!
Fast forward several years until I moved to Hamilton, Missouri and was introduced to Sweet Al’s Donuts. Oh my goodness, they are the best donuts ever!! Their glazed donuts are acclaimed to be “The Best Glazed Donuts Ever” by hundreds from miles around. The apple fritters are equally as delicious but my all time favorite is the powdered sugar covered donut that is filled with vanilla pudding…OH MY GOODNESS!! But no matter what your choice is when you go to Sweet Al’s you won’t be disappointed I promise it is well worth the drive. They have a large collection of railroad decorations complete with a toy train so if you are ever in Cameron, Missouri make sure you stop by Sweet Al’s.
But sometimes you just want to stay home and enjoy homemade donuts. So here are a few easy recipes you can make at home to enjoy donuts in the comfort of your own home.
Biscuit Donuts- Take a can of biscuits, (cut in half if you want) deep fry them until golden brown, cover in sugar while still hot. We use a brown paper sack to do it because they are evenly covered that way.
Baked Pumpkin Donuts or Cinnamon Sugar Apple Butter Donuts would be the perfect fall treat to enjoy!
Peppermint Bark Donuts would be perfect for a holiday brunch or get together!
But one thing is for certain, enjoying a donut is the best way to celebrate Donut Day.
What is your favorite kind of donut?
