Dreamworks Brings Voltron Out of The 80s
Last month I got invited to a Press Day with Dreamworks Animation and was able to get a behind the scenes glimpse into the Animation world. The trip itself was absolutely amazing, but getting a sneak peak into new shows has to be one of my all time favorite things to do ever. Now, before heading to LA I had heard about Voltron, but never watched the anime version growing up. I’m not real sure what rock I hid under, but after watching just an hour I will have to admit I’m hooked and am waiting impatiently for the series to arrive on June 10th. While it is getting closer by the day I’ve been “reliving” my time at Dreamworks by listening to interviews and trying to decide what exactly I wanted to share with you all.
So I decided it was all so important I was going to tell you a little about it all. I know, I know it’s ambitious but we are going to give it a go. We started our day after breakfast with Kelly Kulchak who is the head of current programming. She told us a lot about some of the behind the scenes Dreamworks action. In order for Dreamworks to succeed all of their programming has to be, Timeless, it has to live in that library for a very long time. And more importantly it has to have world wide appeal. The uniqueness of Dreamworks is that their movies appeal to audiences worldwide and we wanted to make sure the television series does the same thing.
Then, we got an amazing sneak peak into Voltron with three episodes that were played back to back. And let me tell you, even as a “New” Votron Fan I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. It delighted fans from the 70’s but it also was the perfect series for beginners like me. Dreamworks really has taken the Japanese anime series from the 80’s (Yes, I was under a rock!), and brought it back to life in an action packed adventure. We are introduced to 5 teenagers that together form a giant robot lion, that forms VOLTRON!!
Voltron is the greatest defender of good in all of the universe and is a new genre for Dreamworks. But with the passion the Dreamworks Staff put into Voltron is a success. It has amazing visual style and their creative team made a binge worthy story-line out of a “classic” if you will. Everything in the story is reverent today which makes it even more successful but it even has original songs throughout the series so it’s not stuck in the 80’s.
It is safe to say that Voltron has smashed the 80’s and is coming back to life for a new generation to enjoy. I for one will be tuning in on June 10th to binge watch Voltron to watch the action unfold. It is really a delight for all ages and a timeless show that will be around for another 40ish years plus some!
