The beautiful islands of Greece have everything. They have history. They have views. They have an abundance of stunning beaches. Mountains. Ocean. Rivers. Whatever you want out of your holiday, chances are whichever Greek island you choose will have it. It’s perfect for solo travellers, couples, families and trips with your friends.
Where to Stay in Greece
You have a few great options when it comes to accommodation. The Greek islands are wonderful because luxuries that are often way out of your budget are within reach here. Greece villa holidays aren’t an unachievable dream; they are stunning, affordable and great for families, couples and groups.
There are also hotels, resorts and private apartments that you can rent, depending on what you are looking for and what your budget is.
How to Get Around Greece
You have a few options when it comes to transportation.
- Public Transport
In cities and throughout islands, there are public transport systems in place. Busses are less reliable than underground networks, however, so keep that in mind. More remote areas can be very hard to get to or impossible if relying solely on public transportation.
- Private Car
To get around the mainland, a private car is the way to go. On islands, you can swap the car for mopeds or scooters.
- Boat or Ferry
To get between islands, you have two options: by sea or by plane. On the water, you can either take one of the large ferries (they give you great views of the islands along the way) or the catamaran (better for speed).
- Flights
Many islands have airports, meaning you can either fly to them directly or fly domestically from Athens.
Best Time to Visit Greece
For the best deals, you’ll want to visit during the winter months when the weather is bordering on cool and you likely won’t want to get into the water. There will be fewer tourists, but you do run the risk that more remote, touristy areas will be shut down for the season.
The best time to visit is at the start and end of summer. April to June and September to October are ideal for adventuring and seeing all there is to see. The weather isn’t so hot that you can’t do much during the day, but it’s still warm enough to wear your shorts and sleeveless dresses.
July and August are hot. They are ideal for beach-side lounging and time spent by the pool.
The Top Destinations in Greece
Finally, what there is to do and see: Greece has so much to offer that you will feel spoiled for choice. Book two or more weeks off to explore the islands and the mainland.
If you need help choosing where to start your Grecian holiday, look no further than these top destinations:
- Mainland: The Historical Wonder of Athens
- Rhodes: Rhodes Medieval Old Town – UNESCO World Heritage Centre
- Zakynthos: Navagio Beach (also known as Shipwreck Beach)
You’ll want to visit Greece again and again, so don’t worry too much if you can’t see everything at once. Do each area properly and give yourself a great reason to come back.
