Favorite Quotes from A Monster Calls
It begins like so many stories, a boy to old to be a kid to young to be a man, and a nightmare. I knew within minutes I would love this movie and that it was different than most. The use of artwork was a brilliant way to tell a story and the story was beautifully told in watercolor, acting and more which makes A Monster Calls even more unique.
One of my favorite scenes in the entire movie is when the son/mother spent time watching a film, but instead of pulling out the VCR she introduced him to another form of movies. “This is much better than a VCR, it’s your Grandpa’s film projector.” It took me back to when I was a kid and it was a way that Conor and his mom could bond and relive memories without it being obvious. But the big point to that scene was, that people don’t like what they don’t understand. Which really tells a story in and of itself both on the screen and off.
“I have came to get you Conor O’malley.” And the monster was introduced to Conor as well as the viewers and he said, ” I will visit you again on several nights. Then I will tell you stories.” You are going to tell me stories? I am…I will tell you Three stories, and then you will tell me your story, it will be your truth, the truth you hide. I know everything about you Conor O’malley. But instead of being scared Conor took it in stride and the rest of the film played out. While I don’t want to be the one to spoil the movie for you, I will tell you that you NEED to watch this amazing film.
Everything will be fine you will see…..
Story: A visually spectacular drama from director J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”). 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), dealing with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness, a less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), and bullying classmates, finds a most unlikely ally when a Monster appears at his bedroom window. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth. Toby Kebbell plays Conor’s father, and Liam Neeson stars in performance-capture and voiceover as the nocturnally visiting Monster of the title.
