If you’re like most people, cleaning your home is not what you’d consider fun. It’s just one of those chores that need to be done and filed away in the ‘finished’ pile. Until the next time you need to do it, which is always much sooner than you’d want.
Still, a clean home is one of the most important prerequisites for a healthy life, so we all just go along with it, begrudgingly. However, there is a way to motivate yourself enough to pick up the broom, vacuum cleaner or a feather duster (whatever your weapon of choice might be) and clean your home.
And who better to tell you about cleaning than professional cleaners at Dirt Detectives, who have countless hours of experience cleaning homes and know just about every trick in the book to pass the time.
Split Up Your Workload into Bite-Size Chunks
Do you know why we all hesitate before we take on a big task, why procrastination is such a common thing? It’s because we perceive the task as a monolith, as a single huge entity that we’re not sure how to approach.
But most things are not like that. Most, even the most complex things we need to do, are just a series of smaller tasks connected together.
So, in order to make the task of cleaning your home less off-putting, all you need to do is segment it into a series of smaller tasks you need to do. For instance, take the morning, whole morning, to just clear the clutter away – put the clothes back in the closets, sort out the papers around your house and the first task will be done without much pressure. Or hire Memorable Maids to help get you caught up, and all other tasks will flow more easily after that.
Time Yourself
Another way to break down the task of cleaning is to allocate a specific amount of time to a single task. Let’s say you need to vacuum the living room. Give yourself 20 minutes for this task and set a timer. If you manage the task in that time, you can reward yourself with a treat, be it food or an episode of your latest binge-watching obsession.
Pretty soon, you’ll be able to tell how long a task will take you, and this little game will take your mind off the fact that you’re not exactly having fun cleaning.
Give Yourself a Proper Soundtrack
Do you have a favorite playlist or album to listen to while working out? Most people do. Why should cleaning be any different? Simply create a playlist of uplifting songs that will help get you in the mood for cleaning, or at least make you forget that you’re actually cleaning your home and not enjoying yourself.
It makes sense to make the playlist a bit longer than the time period you intend to clean, so you wouldn’t listen to the same selection of songs each time you clean. Make a list of at least one hour of your best music and shuffle it for best results.

You May Not Be in the Mood for Cleaning, But Try
Here’s a little trick that you may not know. In situations when you’re not feeling particularly motivated (but also not feeling down), just simply starting doing something might be the best thing for you. Instead of watching another episode of something or scrolling through social media, putting your focus on some activity might be good for you.
And if that task just happens to be cleaning, all the better. If you apply the other tips from this article, you might just discover that you even low-key enjoy cleaning, or at least parts of it. And that’s a start.
