What’s So Great About Gardens?
It’s A Workout
If you’re a keen gardener you’ll already know how good of a workout gardening gives. Walking around your garden planting bulbs and tending to grass may not feel like much exercise, but it is. Bending down and standing up again is all part of planting. This helps to keep us limber and exercises are leg muscles. Similarly pushing a lawnmower around gives our arms a good workout. Some people even suggest that gardening qualifies as a moderate to high-intensity activity. Digging, sowing, watering, all of these tasks are highly physical. So not only will you be working on the aesthetics of your garden, you’ll be increasing your fitness levels too.
It Makes Us Happier
Spending time in our gardens can make us happy for different reasons. Firstly it’s because it’s a great stress reliever. Cortisol is the stress hormone that the body releases when we’re feeling particularly stressed. Some studies have shown that gardening can decrease the amount of cortisol produced. Even putting the science to one side, tending to a garden is said to bring about a positive mood and mindset. Finally, gardening can increase out happiness because of how rewarding it is. There is hard work involved but at the end of all that nurturing, you’re left with tangible results.
It Makes Us Healthier
We’ve already discussed how gardening can provide a great workout, but it can also provide us with a better diet. Growing our own fruit and vegetables is a great way to stay healthy. Fresh produce is free from treatment and fertilizers, taste fresher, and is better for us. Not to mention the food bill will be less!

I’m so excited to start the vegetable garden this year! Just waiting for the ground to be dry enough to till. Not easy in Oregon lol. It’s been raining a lot.
