Hack Your way to Healthier Cooking
We could all benefit from living a little healthier, even if we’re pretty healthy as it is, and one of the easiest ways to boost our health is through the foods we eat. Those of us who cook our own meals are at a bit of an advantage in this regard because we can more easily control what we put in our mouths. However, it is unlikely that we are all doing everything we can to make our cooking optimally healthy.
The good news is, that by employing a few smart hacks we can all increase the healthiness of our cooking. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite healthy cooking hacks:
Use an Air Fryer
We all like to eat fries or fried chicken now and again, but it isn’t exactly the healthiest meal we could serve up to our families. Or is it? If you use an air fryer, you can cook all of your favorite fried foods using less than a tablespoon of oil. It sounds too good to be true, but if you take the time to learn more about Air Fryer, you will quickly see that it is a miracle product that will let you have your cake and eat it.
Try a Spiralizer
Pasta is a favorite dish across the country, but it isn’t exactly the healthiest meal, especially if you’re eating it several times a week. One way you can still enjoy your favorite pasta dishes without all the calories is by using a spiralizer to create ‘spaghetti’ from healthy vegetables such as courgettes and bell peppers. Obviously, it won’t be exactly the same, but once your courgette has been smothered in one of your favorite sauce recipes, it’ll be just as good, and you’ll barely notice the difference.
Switch Mashed Potatoes for Cauliflower
Mashed potatoes are amazing. They’re creamy, buttery…and crammed with calories. There’s nothing wrong with having mashed potatoes once a week or so, but if you want to cut down on your carbs and enjoy a plate of creamy mash more often, try switching your potatoes for cauliflower. It might sound strange, but cauliflower that has been boiled and mashed with a little butter, salt and pepper and a pinch of flour is every bit as creamy and delicious as your regular mashed potatoes.
Make Banana ‘Ice Cream’
We all love ice cream, but it doesn’t love our thighs, so what’s a gal to do when that cool, creamy craving hits? One-ingredient banana ice cream, that’s what! Simply chop and freeze a bag of bananas overnight. Then, when the craving for ice cream hits, place them in the blender, perhaps with a little cocoa powder, or some berries, and blitz. Within seconds, you’ll be looking at something with the texture and taste of ice cream without the calories.
Sprinkle with Cinnamon
Whenever you’re baking sweet treats, throw in some cinnamon. It’s so sweet that you can minimize the amount of sugar you use, and some studies have shown that it also helps to lower blood sugar to boot! It tastes pretty good too.
