Many of us have started 2021 with a desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle and take better care of ourselves. The subject of health has never been more prominent in discussions and news bulletins. If you’ve decided this year is the year to make your health a priority, here are some changes to make.
Giving up smoking
Smoking has a negative effect on almost every organ and system within the body and it is a major risk factor for heart disease, cancer and respiratory illnesses. Giving up smoking is a goal for many, especially at the start of a new year, but it’s not always easy to do. While some people are capable of throwing a packet of cigarettes away and never smoking again, others find it incredibly challenging to quit. Vaping has become more popular in recent years, and some smokers find it easier to cut down by swapping cigarettes for e-cigarettes. It’s also a great idea to see what kind of support is available through your doctor and local pharmacies and to try and encourage friends and family members to get involved too. Setting milestones can be beneficial. Research suggests that if you can quit for 28 days, the chances are giving up for good are five times higher. It can be helpful to switch up your routine if you tend to smoke at the same time every day and to write a list of reasons why you want to give up.
Being more active
Inactivity can elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. If you’re keen to be more active, you’ll notice the benefits immediately. Simple changes like going for a walk every day or leaving the car behind and cycling to work or to the store can make all the difference. Aim to do 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. If you’re not used to exercise, use an activity tracker to help you achieve your targets and try different activities. You don’t have to go to the gym every day to get fit. You can jog, cycle, swim, play team sports, do yoga and Pilates, take boxing or dance classes or work out at home. Exercise offers incredible benefits for your body, but it’s also a natural remedy for stress and it makes you feel good as it triggers the release of endorphins and an increase in serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain.
Getting enough sleep
When was the last time you woke up feeling truly refreshed and well-rested? The majority of US adults are not getting enough sleep and this is alarming, as sleep is essential for good physical and mental health. If you struggle to get to sleep, or you find yourself dozing off on the couch only to lie awake in bed for hours, try and adjust your sleep routine. Allow yourself time in the evenings to wind down and relax and go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Avoid caffeine and eating late at night, exercise regularly and ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet and tranquil. Leave your phone out of the room and never get into bed and check emails or scroll through social media. Check out how to sleep better naturally for even more great tips on improving your sleep.
Adopting a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to mean making dramatic changes. These simple steps will make a huge difference to your health and wellbeing in 2021.
