Helping Your Baby Get Used To Car Journeys

Family

For some parents, taking their babies for a spin in a car is a great way to experience some calm and get a nap in. But it’s not always easy to get to that point, and many babies dislike cars from an early age. Unfortunately, as your baby will inevitably be spending time in a car, it’s essential to get them used to it as quickly as possible. Once they’re used to being in the car, it’ll be much easier to plan longer trips with your bay.

Here are some tips to help you get your baby used to car journeys, so you can both enjoy a peaceful ride.

Invest in a good car seat

A good car seat will be a worthwhile investment. Car seats are there to help babies stay safe and comfortable in the car, and they can come in handy for carrying your baby out of the car safely.

There are a lot of different car seats available, which can make it difficult to choose the best one for your needs. Read the descriptions carefully and see if you can try out different seats to help you choose the right one.

Start by making short journeys

To help your baby get used to being in the car, start with some short journeys. Those first journeys don’t even have to involve going anywhere – just try getting them into the seat and settled into the car. From there, you can start taking them for a drive around the block, to the store, and then start to increase your journey time. You may encounter some niggles along the way, but trying short journeys frequently will get your baby used to being in the car with you.

Make them comfortable

A baby that’s uncomfortable will be sure to find car journeys difficult. Babies can easily become too hot or too cold, so it’s important you make them and the environment around them as comfortable as possible.

It’s recommended that babies don’t spend longer than two hours in a car seat. Regular breaks will help keep your baby comfortable, so make sure you factor these into your journey.

Time your journeys well

While it’s not always possible to plan car journeys around your baby’s routine, it will help you stand a chance of a successful car journey if you can time the journeys right. You’ll want to avoid putting them in the car straight after a feed, especially if they struggle with gas. Make sure they’ve been winded to help them feel more comfortable.

Many parents choose to wait for their babies to be asleep before they put them in the car, but this will vary according to each parent and child’s routine

Be prepared with music and storytime

Keeping your child entertained will help make journeys a little easier for you, and a little more exciting for them. Music and stories will be soothing, and be prepared to sing if your baby likes the sound of your voice! Talking to them will let them know that you’re there, while a small mirror can also help them see you and make the journey less frightening.

You can easily find some playlists that are suitable for babies and children to help keep them entertained. You could also introduce them to some of your favorite songs that one day you can sing along to together!

Always keep essentials stashed in the trunk

Life with a baby can be very unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to prepare for all kinds of emergencies by keeping some essentials in your trunk. Items like diapers and a change of clothes can come in handy if you exhaust everything in your baby bag. If you’re planning a road trip with a baby, there are a lot of other items you’re going to need to make it through the journey.

Always check you have everything you need before you set off, and restock any items that you end up using.

While taking your baby out in the car may not always be easy, it will get better in time. With some practice and some patience, you’ll soon find your rhythm. Once they start to learn that car journeys can be fun, they’ll be bouncing with excitement at the thought of going for a drive.
