Helping Your Pooch Through Pain
To own a dog is to love a dog, so when your precious pooch is suffering from pain, it can be a difficult thing to deal with. The last thing you want is to look at your dog and see that he is hurting, but unfortunately, many dogs do get sick or injured, and that means that many of us will have to see our pets in pain.
If you’re in this situation right now, and your dog is suffering from pain, although you can’t take it away from there, there are lots of things you can do to help…
Get Him to the Vet
Of course, the first thing you should do if you see signs of pain in your dog, such as limping, licking paws, refusing food or changes in behavior, get him to the veterinarian’s office as soon as possible. It may be that the vet can treat the pain away, or at the very least help to medicate for it.
Comfort Him
If your dog has a condition like arthritis that they just have to deal with, then offering him comfort will help to soothe him and take away his anxieties quite a bit. So, give him a stroke, talk sweetly to him, ensure he has a safe space to relax and generally be around for him. Oh, and keep calm because dogs are very good at picking up stress and that’s the last thing you want.
Give Him CBD Oil
Just how CBD oil can help many humans to better manage pain, it can also help dogs, and you can actually buy hemp dog treats that will help to ease his joints and soothe his pain in a natural way. These treats are especially good for older dogs who have lots of general aches and pains that don’t necessarily have to be medicated per se but always check with your vet before feeding your dog anything new, especially if he is on medication.
Take Him Swimming
Therapeutic swimming or hydrotherapy is great for helping dogs who have painful bones or joints because it is a low impact way of exercising and building up muscle strength. So, if your dog is suffering, take him to the nearest canine hydrotherapy center, or even better go have fun with him at the beach and he will feel much better. Do this as often as you can and you will see an improvement.
Put Him on a Diet
You might feel mean doing so, but if your pooch is a little on the porky side, putting him on a diet will relieve the pressure on his body, thus going some way to alleviating his pain.
Get Him a Massage
Certain types of canine pain can be helped by a massage, which you will either need to learn or have a professional do to ensure that you don’t make matters worse.
Give Him a Bath
If your dog is that rare pooch that actually doesn’t hate taking a bath, then putting him in a warm bath might help to ease any discomfort than he is feeling for a short while, just how it helps us to unknot our muscles and ease our pains when we’re having joint or muscle issues.
Most of all, just be there for him!
