There are many things that a family will go through as it matures. Couples blissfully get married and feel as though they are prepared to tackle anything that life throws their way, but this is typically not the case. There is nothing wrong with admitting defeat or seeking additional help when it comes to navigating through trying times. By no means does it mean a difficult time must result in divorce or separation. In some cases, it does mean guidance will help to get through what the family is going through.

When children are presented with these problems, it is important to do everything in your power to make sure they have coping mechanisms at hand to work through the problems the family as a whole is experiencing. To start, there are two basic things that can be done regardless of the experience being worked through. A normal grieving process is typical but sometimes signs of depression are evident. These need to be addressed so that children and adults do not slip into depression or substance abuse.
Addiction to Drugs, Alcohol, or Gambling
When a child witnesses a parent become addicted to substances, it can be very heart-wrenching. Sometimes the child feels as though their parents love drugs, gambling, or alcohol more and that their well-being is not important. Substance abuse can be treated with AA and other support groups, as well as therapists. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are consuming more drugs and alcohol. It is better to find healthy ways to relieve stress such as hikes, exercise, and time outdoors getting fresh air.
Depression and Anxiety
Depression and anxiety can be seasonal, caused by the loss of a job or trying times. It also can be something an individual struggles with for their entire life. In many cases, interventions such as a psychiatrist combined with prescribed medications can help those who suffer to achieve a healthy lifestyle. It is important for everyone in the family to be on board to help the person suffering through their situation.
Financial Struggles
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many financial struggles for families. Many people are forced to work from home while getting their children through remote learning. Some people have completely lost their jobs and others have lost their small family-owned businesses. This time of rebuilding throughout uncertain times is weighing heavily on many families across the country. People are being forced out of their cities due to dangerous situations and many are having to sell their suburban homes because they lack income. Families must come together and help one another through this.
Infidelity
Infidelity in marriage is one of the hardest things to overcome for a family. When a mom or dad cheats, it can make the children feel as though their world is being torn apart. In some cases, one spouse will not forgive the other and a divorce is imminent. In other cases, they are willing to work through their problems to keep the family together. In either scenario, it is important for children to have a safe space to speak to a professional therapist about their own feelings.
Fighting and Arguing
It is never healthy for families to continually fight. This kind of unrest can lead to domestic abuse, substance abuse, or infidelity. When families are in turmoil, they must get to the root cause of the problem to seek an answer and solve the problem before it gets further out of hand.
Everyday Stress
Everyday stress can leave a big imprint on families. Children can feel stressed from school, friends, and extra-curricular activities. Parents can feel stressed from work obligations, running children to and from activities, and simply paying bills and preparing meals. It is important to remember a break is necessary. Get out into nature. Unwind and spend quality time together as a family. These moments of calm can be very rejuvenating for a family.
