How To Afford A Bigger Home

Want to live in a bigger home but can’t afford it? Upsizing involves a lot of forward planning. It may involve a lot of saving up or learning how to play the property market. Here are a few ways that you may be able to one day afford a bigger home.

How to afford a bigger home

Buy in an inexpensive location

Location has a big impact on the value of a property. If you live in a city, buying somewhere more rural may allow you to afford the desired property of your size. You may even be able to buy a cheap place in an upcoming area and then have the choice to sell up when the property is worth more. Many people are tied to a location, but if you’ve got the flexibility to move you should take advantage of it as a one bedroom apartment in one part of the country could cost the same as a three bedroom house in another part of the country.

Renovate your existing home
If you already own a home, you may be able to add more space to it through renovation. This could involve adding an extension. Alternatively, there may be a room such as an attic or a garage that you can convert into another bedroom – useful if you’re expecting a new family member and eventually will need a room for them. Renovation will be less costly than buying a new home, although you may have local restrictions (those living in an apartment won’t be able to extend at all).
Alternatively, you could renovate your existing home as a way of helping you to climb the ladder. By making your home worth more in value, you may be able to afford a bigger home. This doesn’t always involve adding more space – upgrading your kitchen and bathroom to a more luxury standard could be all it takes. Companies such as APT Renovation may be able to carry out this work for you.

Downsize to upsize

It’s possible to make a temporary downsize, allowing you to save up enough money to upsize in the future. This does require some flexibility, but can be very effective. If you’ve got lots of possessions that won’t fit into a smaller property you could consider a temporary storage option such as MyBekins storage facilities. Paying less rent or a smaller mortgage may allow to put more of your income into savings that can then be eventually spent on a deposit for a bigger property.

Make other big cuts

You may be able to make extra savings by making other temporary or permanent cuts. You may be able to save a thousand in a year by not going on holiday. If you’re a smoker, giving up the bad habit could be enough to save hundreds a year. You could even take the drastic option to sell your car if you only need it for convenience and see how much you can save. Living frugally can help you to save up money and many people have done it to achieve a more luxurious lifestyle in the long run.
