How to Create a Backyard That is Stylish Yet Low Maintenance

Home & Organization

The backyard can be one of the areas of our properties that gets the least love, but this can be a massive shame as it is often one of the best spaces on our properties. Even if you have not got the time or the green fingers needed to convert this into an epic space, there is still a chance that you can make an area that you will want to spend time in. Let’s take a closer look at how you can do this.

Start with a Deck

Many great backyards start with an impressive deck area that can be used to create a place for everyone to come together. If you don’t always have the best weather, consider putting the deck under some sort of awning or veranda as this will allow you to use the space even if it is wet outside. You also might want to look into this even if you live somewhere with good weather as it could be the perfect escape from the sun.

Finding a company who can work with you to keep the deck and the rest of the exterior of your property in good condition is key. Forging a relationship with a company like Atkins Deck Treatment Services who have been transforming decks for nearly 30 years could help you significantly. This would help ensure that your deck will always be well cared for, even if you are not the one doing the maintenance personally.

Make sure you finish off your deck with the right furniture. Rattan sofas are incredibly popular at the moment and are brilliant for creating a luxurious outside space. If you want to spend a lot of time outside eating and enjoying food, you might want to also invest in a good table and set of garden chairs, plus a barbeque and maybe even an outdoor fridge.

Add Storage

No matter what, you need some sort of storage out in your garden. Every home needs more storage, and you have a great opportunity to add more to your property here. One of the first things that you need to think about adding is a shed. If you have children, there is a chance that they will have a lot of outdoor toys.

Building a shed means that you have a place where you can put all of their toys to keep the garden looking fresh. Sheds come in a variety of materials such as wood, plastic, and metal. For a more sturdy design and better investment, it would be advised to go down the metal shed route with the help of a metal buildings contractor, to design and construct the product for you.

You could convert it into an outside office if you work from home, or it could be a guest room with the potential to turn into an Airbnb room if you want to make some money on the side from it. You could even choose to just turn this into another outdoor living space with some cosy sofas and blankets – perfect for banishing teenagers to when they have friends over!

Pick Low Maintenance Plants

You can still have a wonderful green backyard space without being a super-keen gardener. There are so many plants you could choose that don’t need a lot of work to look after. Choosing to scatter these around could provide you with the extra greenery you are searching for, and they could help you create a welcoming space that is perfect to relax in.

Whether you don’t fancy cutting the grass or you have a grass allergy, you could also consider AstroTurf instead of a conventional lawn. There have been massive leaps forward here so you can get a great look that people might even mistake for real grass.

You should also think about planters over flowerbeds. The latter can become overrun with weeds before you can blink. It might be better for your home as a whole to have neat plant pots scattered around your backyard office or home deck as opposed to messy flowerbeds. Combine these with easy-to-manage plants like evergreens and you can instantly make a space that is still the green escape that you want it to be without having to learn how to garden or invest in the services of a professional.

It is entirely possible to have that green space that you have always dreamt of, even if you are not the most proficient at gardening. Focus on adding items that will increase the value of your home while also creating a space that you will always enjoy. If you are able to do so, you should be able to put together the perfect backyard that you and your loved ones can come together in. Look at your existing space and start making plans now!
