Gates or barriers

If you have a smaller dog, put up some gates or barriers to prevent them from going into certain areas of the house. This will not only help keep your pet contained, but it will also protect them from any potential hazards in your home.

Larger dogs may not need physical barriers, but they definitely benefit from having a designated space that is just for them. This could be an area in the yard that is fenced off or even a room in the house that has been set up with their bed, toys, and water bowl. Either way, giving your dog their own space will help reduce anxiety and make them feel more comfortable in your home.

Make sure all poisonous items are out of reach

One of the most important things you can do to make your home pet-friendly is to remove any and all items that could potentially be harmful to your furry friend. This includes things like cleaning supplies, medications, and even certain types of plants. If you have these items in your home, be sure to keep them in a place where your dog cannot get to them.

Another thing to keep in mind is food. Many common household foods, such as chocolate and onions, are toxic to dogs. So it’s important that you keep these items out of reach or properly stored away.

Get your dog used to being alone

If you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time, it’s crucial that you get your dog used to being alone. This can be done by gradually increasing the amount of time they spend in their designated space without you. Start with short periods of time, such as 30 minutes, and then slowly increase it until they are comfortable being alone for long periods of time.

It’s also a good idea to leave them with some type of toy or treat that will keep them occupied while you’re gone. This could be a Kong filled with peanut butter or a puzzle toy that dispenses treats. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that your dog enjoys and is not afraid of.

Utilize treats and toys

Treats and toys from the vet are a great way to make your home more pet-friendly for your dog. If you have things like squeaky toys or balls, put them out in different areas of the house so that your dog can find them when they’re exploring. This will not only give them something to do, but it will also help them feel more comfortable in their new surroundings.

You can also use treats to reward your dog for good behavior. This could be something as simple as giving them a treat when they go potty outside or sitting calmly while you’re gone. Whatever you choose, make sure the rewards are consistent so that your dog knows what they’re being rewarded for.

Making your house more pet-friendly doesn’t have to be difficult. By following these simple tips, you can make your home a safe and comfortable place for your furry friend.
