How to Prepare for a Kitchen Refurbishment

Home & Organization

Are you finally getting around to renovating your kitchen? This is the busiest room in the home, which means that it is normally the first place that needs to be refurbished. But, since it is always in use, this can be a difficult task. It means that a lot of families put off a remodel because they do not know how they are going to arrange work to be done.

But, if you want to refurbish your kitchen, now is the time. We have some tips for you that are going to make it easier to prepare for this work. Let’s take a look at them.

Hire an Experienced Builder

You are going to be excited about finally getting a new kitchen. But, you want to make sure that you take your time and choose an experienced builder. This is going to make sure that you get the design you want and you can trust them with creating your new kitchen. Do your research and speak to several builders before you make up your mind. Reviews online from previous customers are going to help too. You want to ensure that you choose an experienced builder and that you can trust you will be happy with the results.

Get a Quote

Next on the agenda is to gather some quotes for your new kitchen. It is best to contact a few builders and see if you can get a good deal. While the cheapest job is not always going to be the best, when you have a few quotes, you can weigh up your options. In addition, a lot of builders are known to offer free quotes for work. So, this is something that you can take advantage of when you want a new kitchen. Make sure to get quotes from other contractors too, like electricians and plumbers. Sometimes it can work out cheaper to hire a builder, electrician and plumber separately rather than a general contractor, so search for local tradesmen with phrases like “Electrician Armadale” to get a quote from a professional near you.

Create a New Kitchen

Remodelling a kitchen is a huge project and one that can take at least several weeks to complete. Thus, you are going to need to create a new kitchen in your home so that you and your family can eat during the day and in the evenings. For example, you can move your microwave into another room in the house, as well as move your fridge and freezer. You might have to sacrifice some of your favourite meals for a while since you might not have a cooker.

However, if you are getting an integrated fridge and freezer, you might worry about storage for all of your food during this time. In order to avoid waste and to ensure that you have food to eat during the construction, you can hire a fridge or freezer trailer. This is going ensure that you do not waste money and that you have plenty to eat when all of the work is going on. Remember that a kitchen renovation can take six to eight weeks to complete. So, you will have a lot of food you need to store.

Box Up Your Belongings

It may surprise you how much stuff you have in your kitchen. From all of your cooking utensils to snacks in the cupboards, it all has to be removed before the renovations can begin. So, before the building work can begin, you need to empty everything out of the room. It can be beneficial to box up all of the items. This is going to ensure that they are kept safe while all of the work is going on. Do not forget to label the boxes too. This is going to make your life so much easier when you are unpacking it all into your newly renovated kitchen.

Protect Other Rooms in the House

When you are having your kitchen renovated, this is going to be a big job. There are going to be builders coming and going while all of the work is being done. There is also going to be a lot of drilling, bringing in materials and hammering going on. So, you want to ensure that other rooms around your kitchen are protected.

For example, make sure that places that may be affected have dust sheets on the furniture. You will be surprised how far dust can travel during construction. In addition, if you have any ornaments or prized possessions that are near the walls of the kitchen, it is best to move them. Again, hammering and drilling can all move structures in your home without you realising. Doing all of this preparation in advance will give you peace of mind when your kitchen is being refurbished.
