The Types of Marijuana Available
Before you learn how to smoke pot, you need to know about the types of marijuana that are available. That way, you can choose the best strains for whatever your weed smoking purposes are.

Indica is the type of weed that’s associated with “body highs.” This means it relaxes you extremely and gives you that couch potato feeling that’s highly associated with stoners.

Sativa, on the other hand, is associated with “head highs.” Instead of making you feel sluggish and relaxed, sativa weed actually invigorates you. This makes is great for artists, as it motivates and inspires them to make wonderful creations.
If you want to smoke weed without being incapacitated, then sativa may be a better choice for you.
Hybrids are really common in dispensaries. In fact, most strains you’ll find will be hybrids, since they combine the best of both worlds.
As you may have guessed, hybrids are a mix between indica and sativa. This means that depending on the strain you get, you may be able to get some marijuana that doesn’t incapacitate you but also still relaxes you.
How to Inhale
There are several methods you can choose to smoke weed. However, no matter which one(s) you choose, you need to know the basics of how to inhale. Otherwise, you’ll be wasting your weed and not getting the full effects you want.
To start off, you need to inhale the smoke slowly and deeply. It should almost feel like you’re swallowing (the smoke will go in the back of your throat). However, you shouldn’t actually swallow the smoke, as this can make you feel ill.
In general, you should aim to fill your lungs as much as possible. Hold the smoke for a few seconds, and then slowly exhale.
If you’re new to smoking anything at all, this process may cause you to choke and cough. It’s very normal and with enough practice, this won’t happen anymore.
It may help to start off with small hits to acclimate your body to smoke. Once you get used to how smoking affects you, then you can gradually up the hits.
Rolling a Joint or Blunt
Many people think that rolling a joint or blunt is how to smoke weed properly.
They wouldn’t be wrong here, as it’s a very simple method that practically anyone can do. Plus, it’s very affordable. For this reason, we’re starting off our guide to smoking pot with this method.
You can definitely buy some prerolled joints at dispensaries, so that eliminates the rolling step. However, if you want to save some money, it’s worth learning how to roll your own joints.
To use this method, you need rolling papers, a crutch (some thin cardboard), and your weed (ground up with a grinder).
Create the crutch by accordion-folding the thin cardboard or business card. Place it at the tip of the rolling paper; this will act as a barrier so the pot won’t fall out while you’re smoking.
Fill the rolling paper with about 0.5 to 1 gram of marijuana. Then, pinch the paper between your fingers and roll it to pack down the weed. Roll up the paper and lick the end of it so you can pat it down and seal the joint.
Stick a pen down the open end to pack down the weed. If you’re saving the joint for later, you can twist the end shut.
Rolling a blunt is very similar, but you use a cigar wrap or tobacco paper or leaves. They’re also a bit larger, which makes them great for group smoking.
Using a Pipe
Using glass pipes allows you to smoke weed while on the go, all without having to roll a joint or blunt.
To smoke from a pipe, you’d fill the bowl with some ground-up weed. Place your thumb on the hole on the side (carb), then light the bowl up while inhaling from the other end where the mouthpiece is. After a second or so, take your thumb off the carb.
Using a Bong
Bongs are a little more complicated, as well as bulky, so these are best used at home. They’re essentially a larger version of glass pipes.
First, fill the bong up with some water, about an inch deep. Put your ground-up weed into the bowl.
Now, put your mouth on the mouthpiece, with your lips on the inside of the glass, not outside. You should create suction with your lips.
Cover the carb with your finger, light the bowl until it turns bright red, and start inhaling the smoke that builds up inside. After a few seconds, remove your finger from the carb and keep inhaling.
