How to Take Your Passion for Dance to the Next Level

Lifestyle

For many people, dance is a way to let loose, have some fun and enjoy the music pulsing through you. For others, dance takes on a deeper meaning and is a way to express themselves through creative movement. If you tend to look at dance as much more than a fun activity and have a real passion for it, why not look for ways to take it to the next level? Finding something you feel that excited about is worth exploring and nurturing. Here’s a look at how you can take the passion you have for dance to the next level.

Take Professional Dance Classes

While it’s wonderful to love dance and enjoy engaging in it, it can also be nice to learn the foundations of the creative outlet you love so much. Taking a professional dance class can open up your eyes, teach you a variety of skills, help you to be a better dancer and boost your passion. You may wish to enroll in a beginner class and then let that content guide you in the future, or you may become hooked on the class environment and pursue it further, working your way up in the skill level.

Learn a New Style of Dance

While on the topic of taking a class, why not take one in a dance style that you aren’t familiar with? There are so many different types of dance that reflect countries, cultures, history and techniques. You don’t want to pigeonhole yourself to just one. It could be that there is a style of dance out there that you’ve never experienced but will quickly become your new favorite once you give it a try.

Some of the most popular dance styles include the following:

  • Ballet
  • Hip hop
  • Contemporary
  • Jazz
  • Tap
  • Ballroom
  • Folk
  • Swing
  • Modern
  • Irish

Learning a new style of dance doesn’t have to be done through a class, however; you could read books on dance and watch instructional videos and content too.

Practice More Regularly

Just like with any hobby or skill, the more you practice, the better you will get. Make it a habit to start engaging in dance more regularly instead of just from time to time. Dance is good for the body and mind, acting as an emotional outlet and exercise all at the same time. Even if you just try dancing for 15-20 minutes a day, you will see that, over time, you become more comfortable and more skilled.

Put Together a Dance Club

You can also level up by finding others who share your passion for dance. Although solo dancing can be fun, if you’re dancing with others, it changes the dynamics completely. There is nothing that should stop you from putting together a dance club of amateurs just like you. The only thing you need to have in common is a love and passion for dance.

When dancing with others, there are different moves you can use and you can learn from each other. A group of people will feed off each other and inspire each person to do their best. It also gives you that sense of belonging by finding like-minded people who share your passion.

Rent Dance Studio Space

Another great way to take your passion for dance to the next level and start improving your skills is to look into dance studio hire. Using a professional dance studio will transform the feeling you get as you dance, and it can challenge you to push yourself in ways you wouldn’t usually consider.

Pirate is a great option for those looking to hire a dance studio to practice in. Their studio spaces are multi-purpose which means you can use them for a variety of dance styles. Take advantage of such features as the impressive sound system, room-length mirror, mood lighting and a freestanding ballet barre.

To keep growing as a dancer, it may be wise to make this a regular habit, renting space as often as possible.

Enter a Dance Competition

Now that you are feeling more confident in your skills and your level of creativity, why not enter into a dance competition? This allows you to dance in front of other people and compete with them, which is an entirely different experience. At the very least, it can help you to build confidence, and show you where you can make improvements.

Dance competitions can be very stressful, so you must recognize that from the get-go and also have a clear plan on how you will deal with your nerves, potential stage fright and pressure. The more competitions you enroll in, the easier it will get.

It’s also common to find many of the same dancers in these competitions, making their rounds, which means you can grow your network of dance contacts.

Watch a Live Dance Production

Sometimes it’s not about what you can do to better your dance moves and tap into your creative side; sometimes, you need to know when to sit back and watch others. Make it a habit to attend as many live dance productions as possible, exposing yourself to an array of skills, styles of dance and interpretations. You can check out professional productions as well as community shows that are put on by amateurs just like you. This may become such an enjoyable hobby that you decide you’d like to travel to various parts of the country, checking out different dance productions/shows. You can even take it a step further and travel internationally, getting a taste for dance in other countries and cultures.

If you feel the desire to dance pulsing through you at all times, there’s no doubt that this is a passion you need to explore further. Whether you choose to keep it as a hobby that you engage in as often as possible, or you decide to level up and try pushing yourself to be a better dancer, it’s entirely up to you. What will you try?
