Interview with Felicity Jones
A Monster Calls is such an emotional film and one that I enjoyed watching through my tears. So when we had the chance to sit down with Felicity Jones it seemed almost surreal. When we asked her what about the script appealed to her she stayed it was a combination of reading the script and the book. She was on holiday with friends and finished reading the book while she was there. She told her friends she was going to be a minute or two and went into the sea and burst into tears. The book hit her in the gut and she new that the film would also do the same thing. I’m here to tell you it really will hit you in the gut.
The film is a masterpiece and one that is truthful, authentic and devastatingly beautiful. She hopes that viewers find it real, raw and truthful. She grew up being close to both of her parents, but her mom was a single parent. The script resonated with her because in so many ways they are friends as well as Mother/Son. They respect each other and loved hanging out with each other on a fundamental level. When we told her that there wasn’t a dry eye in the whole room while we watched the film and she apologized, but it was great. You could see the satisfaction in her eyes.
Working with Lewis MacDougall & Sigourney Weaver
Felicity told us that Lewis was just amazing to work with. He takes his work very seriously, and worked incredibly hard. Felicity thought he was perfect for the part because of how he portrayed that loss, hurt, and even a confused child which made the film in so many ways. They didn’t have to do anything special for him and everyone was in awe of him because he came up with the most insightful, credible things and ideas about the character and the script. Working with Sigourney Weaver was an honor, she was very focused, and for her she believes that work comes before ego and she definitely stayed the course and survived in acting. If you care about something, you have to give it everything.
“He’s a true actor and very good at what he does.” Felicity Jones
The film depicted real life in so many ways, but what we all need to remember is, “Not everyone lives happily ever after. It’s messily ever after.” And it’s true. Life gets messy and you’ve got to make the best out of it. Be sure to head out to the theater to watch this amazing film, I promise you will be glad you did.
