Interviewing Dylan Ed and Kerris
*Disclosure: I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the coverage of several press events for Disney. All opinions are 100% my own.
After interview Jennifer and Steve we thought that it would have been the funniest interview in the line up, however, this terrific threesome was just a hilarous which is a big feat in and of itself. I was in awe of their personalities, humor and of course honestly throughout the whole interview. For being kids they are very mature, great actors/actresses and amazing teens that will grow into fantastic adults.
Favorite Scene With Steve
Ed : I think the party scene.
Dylan : I’ve been saying the party scene.
Kerris : Party scene.
It was a unanimous vote for the party scene to be their favorite scene because it was cool, fun and there were 200 people, animals, swimming, music and food. It was kind of like home to them because they were there for three nights in a row and three days of filming. It took a lot of dancing, barbecuing and of course eating because there was so many things to cover for those scenes. It also included Thunder Down Under and lots of animals, but Ed said, “It didn’t feel like they were working.”
Sick Acting
Kerris acted sick in a lot of her scenes so when we asked her about her tips for being sick, she quickly changed into her “sick” voice. Her tips to making a sick voice includes:
- It is more nasally, so back in your throat and then in your nose.
- M’s have to be B sounding
- Watch lots of YouTube video’s of people talking while they are sick.Q : So a lot in your role in the film, you were sick. I just wondered if you had any good tips for us in case we wanted to take a sick day.
American Accent
Ed had to learn an American Accent but admitted to us it was pretty hard, but easy at the same time. He was brought up watching American films and TV, but he had to have training in order to get the tips and tricks to get it to sound authentic.
Hardest Scene to Keep Composure
The hardest scene for them to keep their composure was also a unanimous decision with it being the car scene. Everyone was making “stupid” noises and it was hard to keep a straight face, while they made a musical song out of weird noises. Dylan had it the hardest in my opinion because he had to keep a straight face during all of the calamity around him!
The DMV scene was also hard to keep their composure because they were all yelling at each other. That section of the movie took an entire day of filming and off camera they were literally laughing so hard they were crying according to Dylan. But once they were on camera he had to be serious because he was getting into trouble for crashing the van.
Best Worst Day
Best Worst Day is part of the movie that is on on a soundtrack and Kerris Dorris actually wrote that song as well as performed it herself. But she worked along side her sister who is a singer/songwriter to make it happen in the short window they were provided with. They watched the trailer for inspiration and captured the essence of Disney and worst day sort of turning out to be the best day. It all came together in a way that it’s in the end credits. So we were really happy.
The Narwhals is Dylan’s band that is amazing according to Ed and Kerris. The Narwhals was also featured in the movie playing the song, “Surf, Surf, Don’t Drown.”
They even worked together to write a song for Steve that made him emotional. Ed told us all about it,
That was the genius minds of Kerris and Justine Dorsey. And because all the way during the set we had this on the party, we always had the song Beds are Burning by Midnight Oil. So that was always in our heads. So the song was to the tune of that. But it was all about working with him and all about his character. And it was really cool. We all sang it. And, yeah, he did get really emotional. It was really nice.
Dylan agreed that Steve got emotional and Kerris said “it was one of the most special moments ever ’cause–it was sad at the same time. It was near the end, it was his last “official” day and it was a special moment that turned out to be amazing. It makes them happy just retelling the story you could tell because of the glimmer in their eyes!
Original Book
Because the movie was based off of the original book, Alexander and the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day we asked them about reading it as kids.
Kerris read it as a kid, and her mom read it to her and her sister and because she grew up with it, she loved it.
Dylan didn’t read it when he was younger or have it read to him, but he is proud to be a part of it now bringing it back to people’s attention.
Ed was familiar with it, but had never read it either, but he thought of the book like this: “that’s the book with the stupid title. The Alexander– [MUMBLES] and I still call it that today.”
Take Away from the Film
Their friendship with each other because it is an honest to goodness friendship that was made through filming, but it was like fate brought them together to be close to one another. They are all proud of a movie that they enjoyed making and it is very dear to their hearts as it should be.
You could tell that these three made the perfect movie together and will be friends for years to come. I am very honored to have met them and look forward to watching them grow up into adults.
