Interviewing Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias
*Disclosure: I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the coverage of several press events for Disney, Pixar and Google. All opinions are 100% my own.
Interviewing Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias was a fun experience for a group of 25 Disney bloggers and I was lucky enough to be one of them. The movie Inside Out is about a girl named Riley who is voiced by Kaitlyn Dias and it tells a story of the emotions inside our heads. Growing up is a hard job but Kaitlyn voiced the role perfectly even though there is some complexity to the movie. Kyle MacLachlan played Riley’s Dad and done an equally impressive job with his character and we were honored to have the chance to visit with such talented individuals.
Voice over and acting are two separate things and for the most part Kaitlyn and Kyle recorded separately. But they did have one thing in common and that was Pete Doctor and a video screen. Pete and/or Jonas were usually on the video monitor in Emeryville and the other two were usually in Los Angeles so it was fun for them, but they missed working with “each other” because it would have been fun. They did travel to Emeryville once a month or so, but it allowed Kaitlyn to stay in her normal school which was a benefit for her.
The script is something that usually draws the voices to the movies and makes them want to do the job. But Inside Out was a little different for Kailtyn because she started as a scratch voice. She hadn’t even read the whole script when she first started, but after being asked to stay for the entire film and now Riley’s First Date just blew her mind. She was 11 at the time and was able to relate to Riley on several levels. But you would never have guessed that this was their first time doing voice acting!Over time she had to make her voice a bit higher to make it sound younger. But was started at 11 and then just had to keep her voice consistent throughout the entire movie. But Kyle only worked on Inside Out for a year and half but is honored to be a contributor to the movie. But he believes that the Pixar people deserve all of the credit because they are so creative, inventive and fantastic. I think that it took everyone to make such a great movie and couldn’t imagine it any other way.
Kevin told us that he was glad that Pixar called and that the movie itself was intriguing. Over the year and a half that he was involved he was impressed with the subtle changes and shifts that allowed the collaboration to be natural and good.
The Emotions Get Inside Your Head
After watching Inside Out the emotions get inside your head and you often find yourself thinking, Joy must be at the controls now. Inside Out allows you to think about your own thoughts as a child, adult, parent or any role you have in your day to day life. I believe watching Inside Out is one of the best things that any of us could do because it makes us touch base with our emotions.
We each have a favorite emotion and usually they are for different reasons. Kaitlyn’s favorite emotion is Anger because he has hilarious facial expressions. Plus the fact that he explodes and you make s’mores off of him or use him as a blow torch.
Kyle MacLachlan likes Joy because he tends to be in joy mode most of the time and identifies with her the most. But part of his personality went into the character because he is pretty patient, calm and relaxed which reflected in the movie.
Riley’s First Date
After every great movie comes a sequel right? We had the opportunity to see Riley’s First Date which is a short included on the Blu-Ray DVD that is available for purchase! It is the perfect way to bring back those first date memories and of course a great way to watch Riley blossom into a young woman. We all know that growing up is hard work, but with the emotions inside our heads and parents we can get through about anything! Bringing home a first date is tough no matter which side of the fence you are on but with a glimpse into the teenager’s head life makes a little more sense. Sometimes as parents we wonder if we are doing things correctly, screwing things up completely, or even just surviving our daily lives. But we all do what is best for our child(ren) by protecting them, nurturing them and of course supporting them. It may not be the smoothest roads but there is one thing about it, and that is it is an emotional ride!
Pick up your copy of Inside Out available on DVD/Blu-Ray now! I promise you will be glad you did!

Your review of the film and getting to talk with the actors was very informative. Do you have any other film pressers lined up for the 2015 Christmas season?

Upon seeing this blog I want to watch Riley’s First Date right now. Its up online. I really thought it was a hoax because I just watch Inside Out last week and then they release a sequel. I felt sad for his imaginary friend though he sacrifice himself to save Joy. 🙁
