There comes a time for most dog owners when they will have to think about leaving their pets behind as they head off on a work trip or family vacation or something like that. This can be a really stressful thing to have to do for the first time, mainly because you will find yourself worrying so much about your dog and how he will cope.
The good news is, there are lots of things you can do to ensure your pet is as safe and happy as possible when you need to leave him behind, as you will see below.
Choose a great place for him to stay
You will feel a lot more comfortable, and your dog will be a whole lot happier, if you choose a safe and happy place for him to stay. this could be a dog boarding place with great reviews or with a friend or family member who he loves and who you trust to take care of him. Take your time to find the right place and it will be a weight off your mind.
Update his tags
If he is staying in a new location for a while, update his tags so that if he is lost, the people he is staying with can be contacted as quickly as possible.
Don’t make a fuss when you leave
If you want him to be as calm as possible, you should not make a big fuss when you say goodbye, Try to keep it as much of a normal goodbye as you give him when you head to work for the day. The bigger a thing you make of it, the more alert he will be to the situation being unusual, which means he is more likely to get stressed out. It might be tough for you, but a short and sweet parenting is what is likely to be best for your dog.
Create a package of his favorite things
If he is going to be looked after outside of the home, then creating a package of his favorite things, such as his regular pet food and favorite tasty treats, the toys he plays with the most, and his own bedding, you can send with him to where he is staying will help to comfort him while you’re gone.
Leave a piece of you with him too
It’s probably also a good idea to leave him one of your sweatersor something with your scent on so he can smell it whenever he is missing you. Our scent can be incredibly comforting to the dogs in our life, so this is a really good way to feel like you are with him even when you are apart.
It’s always a wrench to leave your dog behind when you head off for an extended period, but as you can see, there are lots of things you can do to minimize any distress to your dog and ensure that he is as happy as he can possibly be without his humans.
