Legal Tips for Travellers in Düsseldorf – Navigating the City with Confidence

Travel

Travelling around, and the planning phase of it, is probably one of the most exciting and daunting experience for every human, and even more for young adults. German cities seem to gain high interest in being visited, with major contradictions observed from cosmopolitan vibrant cities to stunning natural landscapes, and the bustling city of Düsseldorf on the banks of the Rhine River, is definitely one of them. Although, before embarking on your journey, it is important to familiarize yourself with the local legalistic frame. This is the very first step, ensuring your navigation in the city will be a trouble-free experience.

  1. Communication:

Even though our first tip is not exactly a law-related one, it is yet important and can unlock an advanced staying. Even though English are widely-spoken in the country and the region, putting some effort learning a few basic German phrases, won’t be a waste. Simple greetings and phrases of gratitude are always well-received, as being the proof of your respect towards the local culture and the most perfect ice-breaker to interact with local, especially elders, whose tips could enhance your journey.

  1. Be polite:

Each culture comes with its own unofficial handbook of good manners and respectful behaviour. When referring to the German one, there are three basic principles. Firstly and most importantly, be punctual for appointments, meetings or any kind of events. Secondly, personal space is unnegotiable. This “rule” comes in two terms; avoiding standing extremely close to the other person violating their boundaries, and maintaining a moderate volume level in public spaces (cafés, restaurants, public transport) against disruption. The last good to know thing, is the typical greeting, which is a handshake, preferably with eye-contact.

  1. Laws & Regulations:

The everyday habits that could get you into trouble and demand consulting a legal firm in Dusseldorf if not being aware of the specific legal framework, concern the consumption of alcohol and smoking.
Alcohol is legal above 18 years old, and allowed in most of the public places, unless a relative sign prohibits so. Although, the law is very strict when it comes to driving, with the legal blood alcohol concentration being extremely low, indicating it’s safer to completely avoid drinking if planning to drive.
As it comes to smoking, you will have to look for places clearly marked with signs or designated smoking shelters, as it is not allowed in any kind of not allowed in enclosed public spaces.

  1. 24/7 Support:

Being far from home might create plenty of unpleasant feeling in cases of unpredicted events, or emergencies. Consider obtaining comprehensive travel insurance with 24/7 costumer support, and most importantly get to know the numbers to be dialled in cases of immediate assistance needed.
