May 31st is National Macaroon Day!
Celebrate National Macaroon Day by baking a big batch of delicious macaroons! Even though macaroons look like cookies, they are actually classified as little cakes. Macaroons were invented in Italy in the 18th century. Their name is derived from the word “macccarone” which is the Italian word for paste because the key ingredient was almond paste. Today macaroons are made of sugar, egg whites and usually coconut. They can have chocolate drizzled on top, or a cherry in the middle. If you don’t feel like cooking a big batch of coconutty macaroons on May 31st, be sure to grab a box at the store for you and your family to enjoy!
