Pro Tip: Hire Locally

When hiring a moving truck, think about hiring a local company. Chances are this will save you money and time. You may want to consider websites that advertise locally, such as man and van services in Liverpool, where you can find all of the moving companies and services listed.

Start From the Bottom and Work Your Way Up

The heaviest things should go on the bottom of the truck and the lightest on the top. This is obvious, as you don’t want something to get broken or squashed. So bigger pieces of furniture will be loaded first. Having that in mind, make sure that the way for movers is cleared. The boxes and smaller things which will go on top should be in the corners of your house where they won’t be in the way.

Spread the Weight Evenly

The weight should be spread out evenly throughout the truck. You should take this into consideration when organizing your boxes for the move. To maximize the use of space in the truck, think about lighter objects that can fit in between pieces of furniture or on top and pack them accordingly.

Consider the Layout of Your New Home

Once the real estate agents hand you the keys, make sure when the time comes to pack your things in the truck to place them strategically. You want to save space, but also time when you take them out. So take into account also the layout of your new home. Place your belongings in the truck in the opposite way from how you plan on moving them into your new home.

Tape Smaller Pieces to the Big One

Screws, nuts, bolts, and similar things should be kept together. Place them in a zip-lock bag and tape it to the piece of furniture they belong to. Not only will it be easier for you to determine which pieces go together, but you also optimize space in the truck this way.

Pack Rugs and Carpets Strategically

As you need to clean up your rental when moving out, start by removing the rugs- Roll them inside out so the backs don’t get damaged. Then place a protective wrap around them. Use the inside of a rolled rug to place items that are long and narrow to save up space in the truck. You also want to place towels or plastic wrap on top and bottom to prevent rolled things from falling out.

Use Small Spaces Between Bigger Items

Small spaces in between the large items often go unused, thus not optimizing space in the truck. If you have a couch with elevated legs, use the space beneath it to place smaller boxes. No need to worry about your belongings getting broken.

Sell Things You Won’t Need

Pack only essentials when moving and leave all the stuff you won’t need behind. You may choose to donate, sell, or gift the excess items. Selling the almost-new items can help you pay for the move or even decorate your new home.

Ask Friends to Guard Important Items

To optimize space in the truck, ask friends to hold onto your precious things, like family heirlooms, expensive jewellery, etc. Those aren’t typically big, so it won’t take too much of their space. You can later collect them, once you’ve settled in.

Moving doesn’t necessarily have to worry you or stress you out of your mind. Strategic thinking and packing go a long way to help you move efficiently and without losing your cool. And the most important tip: don’t be afraid to ask your neighbours, family, or friends for help if you need it.
