Online Gambling in the ’90s: How It Started

Family

Online casino gamblers in this day and age do not need to search for too long before they find a no deposit bonus casino to sign up with. However, this was not always the case. Back at the start of online gambling in the ’90s, it was hard work finding a casino site, let alone finding one you could truly trust.

Indivisible Gaming

Times have indeed changed, and today, there are hundreds of online casinos, with many more being launched each year. Technology has advanced considerably too, with progressive sportsbook software now available; offering players the chance to wager on more than eighty sports leagues, two live dealer casinos, a premium casino, in-game and props, and bookies the chance for less stress, more action, and more profit. This post takes a look back at when it all started.

Antigua and Barbuda – the Caribbean Islands Where the Online Gambling Industry Began

Online casino gambling first began back in the middle of the 1990s. In those days, the quality of the internet casino sites was way inferior compared to what we get today. But it was at least a start in the chain of events that would follow to transform the iGaming industry into what it is now.

A relatively unknown Caribbean island nation called Antigua and Barbuda was where the first internet casino gambling site was established. Antigua and Barbuda was perfectly suited for online gambling because of their Free Trade and Processing Act. Check also which digital lottery is good for playing in Canada.

With the Free Trade and Processing Act, business owners could apply for online casino licensing and be granted the licence by the government of Antigua and Barbuda. It gave rise to the start of the online casino gambling industry.

In the mid-90s, Microgaming, a prominent software developer, came into reckoning with the launch of GamingClub in 1995. Many industry observers strongly believe that GamingClub was the first-ever iGaming site on the Internet.

Microgaming today is one of the world’s largest online casino game software developers. They have steadily transformed the iGaming industry with innovative, top-of-the-range casino games that support every type of Internet gaming website. As well as casino games, there are many different ways of betting like on sports. Nowadays there are multiple ways of betting on sports including the best soccer betting sites.

The Formation of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission

The history of online casino gambling will not be complete without mentioning the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, which was established in 1996. This gaming commission is the brainchild of the Canadian Mohawk Indian tribe.

Like the Antigua and Barbuda government under the Free Trade and Processing Act, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission had the power to issue online casino gambling licences to prospective iGaming sites.

The launch of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission led to a surge in the number of licensed iGaming sites. By the last quarter of 1996, there were about 15 fully functioning online gambling sites. Apart from Microgaming’s GameClub, InterCasino was another very popular internet gambling platform in the ’90s.

By 1997, the iGaming industry had over 200 fully operational Internet gaming sites. These included

  • sportsbooks
  • video poker websites
  • online casinos

The online casinos were spread all over the globe. At the time, the estimated revenue of the iGaming industry was just about amounting to USD 1 billion per annum. Read also about casinos having a record year in 2021.

The History of Sports Betting

The first recorded sports betting site was InterTops which was established in 1996. Customers of this sports betting site could place wagers on different sporting events. InterTops was an instant success that led to their expansion into an even larger pool of sporting events.

Between 1996 and 1998, more bookmakers would be formed and join the sports betting market. At the time, the two most popular bookmakers were Ladbrokes and William Hill.

These sports betting sites would revolutionise the sports betting industry by introducing different markets and virtual or e-sports betting. Today, all you need to do is search for something like Major Toto to find an online betting site, perfect for sports betting lovers.

It is important to keep in mind that not all sports betting sites are good, and there is always the potential that something could go wrong. This is why you should check out sites like mtgal.com which can show reviews and safety information for gambling sites.

The ’90s an Era of Huge Bonus Incentives

Even back in the late ’90s, online gambling sites like Ladbrokes and William Hill offered new and existing customers several exciting bonus offers. The bonuses were often huge and very attractive.

In the ’90s and early 2000s, online gambling sites focused their energy on promotional offers to draw traffic, improve patronage, and ultimately margins.

No deposit free spins casino sites offered potential customers large numbers of bonus spins on video slot games. It was a field day for active punters in the early days of iGaming.

However, with the maturity of the iGaming industry, the outrageous bonus offers that were a common theme of Internet gaming sites in the late ’90s and early 2000s have slowly but surely subsided.

Betfair Introduce Peer-to-Peer Betting in 2000

Betfair is a sports betting company that revolutionised the industry in 2000 by introducing peer-to-peer betting. It was indeed an exquisite form of gambling at the time.

Peer-to-peer betting enabled registered punters to place wagers between themselves, with Betfair facilitating the bet and receiving a commission on each peer-to-peer bet.

Betfair created a thriving market for in-play live sports betting. Punters could now place bets in various betting markets for live sporting events. Betfair was also one of the iGaming industry players that pushed hard for the success of mobile gambling, something that is hugely popular today.

The Birth of Planet Poker in 1998

Planet Poker will go down in history as the first online poker site. Launched in 1998, Planet Poker will rapidly establish itself as the go-to site for top ranking poker players at the time. Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, a winner of the popular WSOP bracelet, was one world-class poker player who was regularly linked to Planet Poker.

Sadly, the Planet Poker online poker site suffered from many technical issues attributed to the dial-up internet technology that existed in the ’90s. The poor download speed and other problems led to the demise of Planet Poker.

But by 1999, a new online poker site called Paradise Poker would be established in Costa Rica. Paradise Poker would become one of the video poker industry’s leading poker sites. Paradise Poker used advanced technology (at the time) to attract thousands of online poker players to its site daily.

The Emergence of Online Tournament Satellites

Two well known online poker websites formed in the early 2000s were:

  • PartyPoker
  • PokerStars

Today PokerStars and PartyPoker are the best gaming sites for online poker players.

PokerStars came to prominence with the introduction of online tournament satellites, which enables poker players worldwide to compete amongst themselves for a share of a poker tournament prize pool.

The world of iGaming would not be where it is today if not for the pioneers of the ’90s. Antigua and Barbuda put the online casino gambling industry on the map while Microgaming provided the flagship online casino and the rest, as they say, is history!
