Planes Fire and Rescue Van Nuys Air Tanker Visit
*Disclosure: I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the coverage of several press events for Disney. All opinions are 100% my own.
As part of my latest Los Angeles trip I was honored to learn a few things about Planes Fire and Rescue at the Van Nuys Air Tanker. It was an amazing experience that I will not soon forget and they people we met were just as great as the atmosphere itself. Disney prides itself on their movies being correct and puts lots of research into making the movies as real to life as they can. This is where we met LA County Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Steve Martin and got some of the back story of the research that went into making Planes Fire and Rescue.
Steve: So I received a phone call from some folks that Gabby had worked with about three years ago and they said hey, you know that movie Cars? I’m like yeah. They go were going to do one on planes. And I go well, that sounds like a cool idea. But the Disney folks are so square, they go yeah, we’re working for 2014, 15 and 16, like way out. So they were just doing, at that time, investigating it and fact gathering and wanted to know some things. So like I said I’ve got to give props to the Disney people. They do their homework.
And one of the things was I said, well, now here. You can look at our aircraft that we have, take a look at this aircraft here which is highly visible during the brush and forest fire seasons that we have here. So they came out and they met our folks just like you did today, came here to the facility. They met some of the pilots, the maintenance crew. They walked around the aircraft and had them fire it up. They listened to the sound of it. They watched it fly. I think some of them even took a flight in it. They really, really did their homework.
They went back to the offices, called me a few weeks later, hey we missed a little something. Can we come again? Sure, come on out. So we had been out here a few times and after that time what they did was they started sending me information- what looked like early scripts. They would send me a script and then highlight, is this the proper word? Is this what terminology you would use? Is this what you– what would you say in this case? And a lot of times they would scratch something out and I’d say no, no we don’t talk like that. This was good. And we helped them, and became a technical advisor for the film.
Basically there make a movie but they wanted to be technically correct. And if I look back and I think when my son was young and I go to Disney movies and it’s something that I don’t know a lot about, it sure sounded like it was correct. But in this case here when it was about the aircraft and it was about flying, it was about the fire department, it was about rescues, we knew the language that we speak. And they took every single one of those things that I said and put it in the script and change the script
Steve told us that Disney even mentioned him in the credits as well as the LA County Fire Department. He thought it was very unique and was honored to be a part of this amazing film.
After Steve told us all about his experience, filled us in on the details we had the chance to do and look at the planes and helicopters closely. It was a very unique experience to say the least. Dottie the plane picks up 1,600 gallons of water in just 12 seconds just like this aircraft in the movie. I love that Disney cares so much about not only entertaining us with their movies, but making movies like these educational as well!
Enjoy this quick slideshow of the planes!
Fire Safety Week
We even were trained on how to properly put out a fire by a fire fighter who works for LA County Fire Department. He teaches (CERT Training) Community Emergency Response Teams which is a nation wide program. The CERT program allows civilians to help their community in case of a national disaster.
Fire Safety Tips
Put out small fires (call the fire department for bigger fires)
If you use a fire extinguisher have it serviced or purchase a new one. That way you are always prepared for a fire in your home.
Purchase a fire extinguisher for your kitchen and at least 1 bedroom.
Never turn your back on a fire, even when you think it is out back away from the fire to be safe.
He even taught us how to properly to extinguish fires.
Check out the pictures in live action of me fighting my first fire here!
Don’t forget to pick up your copy Planes Fire and Rescue on November 4,2014 when it makes it’s Blu-Ray/DVD appearance at a store near you!
