Being a pet parent is one of the most rewarding things that we as humans can do for our families. Before we know it our pets become family members and we are lost when we lose one. At the beginning of the 2014 school year we lost our beloved Chocolate Lab Sadie who had been with us for 11 years and was just as spoiled as our daughter Elizabeth. She was honestly the second child we never had for all of those years. She was the type of pet who got holiday presents, gifts just because and of course lots of love. But after a few months, we missed having a four legged child in our house so we started looking and discussing possibilities of a new family pet.

After a few months of looking and discussing, Mr. SMSL found the perfect dog in December of 2014, so we talked it over as a family. Elizabeth was more than hesitant, and really wasn’t on board for getting a new dog, but has accepted Diesel into our home as well as family. We all agree that she is a pretty good dog, but that she will never replace our beloved Sadie. Being a pet parent comes with more responsibilities, expenses and often times, lots of laughs with an occasional broken heart. But there are lots of ways to care for your pets all year long including the normal care, monthly care and of course annual check ups. Daily care for pets include feeding your pets the recommended amounts of commercial animal food as well as keeping fresh water available to them at all times.

Just like us, animals need bedding as well as shelter, which depends greatly on your area’s climate, home or even whether they are an inside or an outside pet. We have a dog bed for Diesel, as well as a doghouse for her to use when we aren’t home and she is outside. This way Diesel is protected from all of our extreme Midwestern Seasons both inside and out.

Regular grooming as well as preventative shots, regular veterinary visits, Spay/Neutering if that is appropriate for your pet and family. But the work doesn’t stop there, they have to be taught obedience, have exercise time as well as licensing and ID’s as required by your city, county or state. Most importantly your pets need flea and tick protection 12 months a year, not just in the peak seasons. Our preferred brand is Adams™ Flea and Tick Control Products. Their Flea and Tick Spot On® product Comes with a free Adams™ Smart Shield® applicator and makes messy applications a thing of the past. Plus, it is available at our local Walmart.

Be sure you get entered for a chance to win the Adams Start Smart/Stay Smart sweepstakes that kicked off on March 4, 2015 and Sweepstakes Ends July 31,2015!!! When you enter for your chance to win, you also get free flea & tick outbreak alerts from Adams™ Brand to keep you up to date from Adams as well as get you entered for a chance to win $2,500!! With the spring season here, I know that fleas and ticks will be making a comeback, and I don’t want any outbreaks at our house. But with the help of Adams™ Flea and Tick Control Products we should be outbreak free at the SMSL household! Always do what is best for your pets and keeping them flea and tick free is a great way to show them your love!! My dog Ginger is super playful but runs around way too much outside. I am glad to know that there are sprays that help protect my dear Ginger from being eaten by ticks. It is important to take care of your dogs externally, but it is also important to take care of your dogs internal health with dental check ups, and vet reviews. I am glad to know there are so many resources to help keep her healthy.
