Queen of Katwe Review
*I received an all expenses paid trip to LA to provide coverage of The BFG Event, however as always opinions are 100% my own. #TheBFG #TheBFGEvent #QueenofKatwe #FutureWorm
Watching the movie QUEEN OF KATWE on the Disney Lot was a magical experience and one that brought on a few tears throughout the movie. Based on a true story Queen of Katwe tells a story of a young girl from the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess. The movie had a very “African” setting and I felt immersed into the culture from the opening until the end of the movie.
One of the first things I noticed was that the family and neighbors were all very poor in comparison to our standards. But that didn’t stop them from having pride in their belongings. Money of course is one thing that we all have in common and often times there isn’t enough to go around, but for this family it was something that they lacked. Because of their lack of money children weren’t allowed to play football because it causes broken bones. But when the coach introduced them to Chess their lives began to change.
I personally have never learned how to play Chess, so I was worried that their would be parts in the movie that didn’t make sense, but that isn’t the case at all. If anything I would be more comfortable sitting down to learn chess now, just because it makes a little more sense because of watching Queen of Katwe. Your life is what you make it is one of the first things that stuck in my mind as I watched the movie. Even though the odds were stacked against the family they seemed to always rise above it and learn from each other.
Queen of Katwe is a truly inspirational movie that tugged on my heartstrings during several moments of the film. Challenges that we face often times are looked at as a curse and that is something we need to change. They aren’t really a curse, but a bump in the road to bigger, better things. Sometimes the place you belong to and are comfortable in is not the place you belong, but if you work hard and believe in yourself great things will happen. Queen of Katwe is a must watch movie, just remember to pack your tissues and be prepared for an inspiring story!
