Scrapple Day or Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day
Srapple Day is a new one to me! Maybe it’s a good thing that I try to do these everyday so I continue to learn but after figuring out what scrapple is it might be interesting to try it once. Scrapple is basically pork scraps and trimmings mixed with flour and cornmeal as well as other spices.
The Pennsylvania Dutch made this as a treat because of their ability to use it as another way to be more “frugal”. I am sure that my Nana and Papa would have had this as meal growing up, but they are no longer around to ask. It is definitely a meal that would have been served when using every bit of the hog on the farm would have been a necessity.
If Scrapple isn’t your thing you can try to cook something bold and pungent! The name of it just makes me think ewe, that’s disgusting, but to each their own. But when I asked Mr. SMSL to come up with a dish he said, “That’s easy, just cook with garlic.” Well, there you have it, cook something tasty with some garlic and you can celebrate this national food holiday easily.
So which will you be celebrating today?
