Signs Your Exhaust System Needs Attention

Family

Exhaust systems don’t usually fail without warning. For the most part, they’ll fail gradually as components corrode, loosen, or become restricted. And the difficulty with failing exhaust systems is that most drivers don’t realise this is happening until it’s too late. They either don’t recognise the signs or attribute them to other mechanical problems instead. And sadly, this mistake is what can exacerbate the problem massively.

With this in mind, let’s identify some warning signs that your exhaust system needs attention.

Unusual or Increasing Exhaust Noise

One of the earliest signs of exhaust failure is a change in noise. It’ll be a louder exhaust note, rattling under the vehicle, or a sharp popping sound from a leak, broken mount, or failing joint.

These noises, while they might not be immediately noticeable, will deteriorate over time, meaning the sounds produced become louder, more pronounced, and eventually unavoidable.

Even if you feel you hear something that isn’t quite right, get it checked out for peace of mind.

Reduced Performance

Your exhaust system plays an integral part in relation to engine performance. Restrictions as a result of collapsed pipes, damaged mufflers, or failing catalytic converters result in exhaust gases not being able to move as freely as they should.

And when this happens, drivers often identify the problem as reduced performance or poor acceleration. If your vehicle is starting to feel sluggish when accelerating, you’re feeling a loss of power, or you can’t maintain speed, it might be worth getting your exhaust system checked out to see if there are any issues.

Strong Smells or Exhaust Odours

Exhaust smells should never be ignored. If you can smell exhaust fumes inside the vehicle, you have a problem. These gases should be expelled from the rear of the car, and you shouldn’t be able to smell them inside, especially if all windows are closed.

If you notice a rotten egg smell or sulphur, this usually points towards a catalytic converter problem or a fuel system imbalance. It’s a good idea to have this investigated further. You might need a quick muffler repair or something more extensive as part of a wider exhaust system fault.

Visible Damage or Rust

Exhaust systems are particularly susceptible to rust as they are exposed to heat, moisture, road debris, and salt, increasing the risk of corrosion — something many drivers experience on a regular basis.

Once you have rusted pipes, cracked welds, or visibly sagging sections, you’re already experiencing weakened structural integrity. Once this process has started, exhaust components can fail suddenly and completely.

Regular visual inspections can spot this, as can regular maintenance or repairs to ensure your vehicle is performing as it needs to be.

There are, as you can see, multiple signs your exhaust system needs some TLC. Failing to acknowledge signs of exhaust system damage compromises the driving experience and the safety of the vehicle as a whole, so it’s really important you get any problems addressed sooner rather than later.
