Tip #1 – Organize the Diaper Bag
First of all, organization is the key to avoiding a future disaster when it comes to babies. It is not easy to stay organized when caring for a baby involves such great flexibility. However, five minutes daily can make the difference the next morning. One of the most efficient daily organizational habits is to take inventory and re-stock the diaper bag every night. There is nothing worse than realizing before a diaper change the next day that the baby wipes are
diaper change the next day that the baby wipes are gone. And then remembering you used all of them two days ago when at the playgroup. Replenish the wipes, diapers, formula, snacks and whatever else has become an essential must-have.
Tip #2 – Diaper Layering
Now that the diaper bag is ready to go, a great little-known baby care trick that works wonders when diapering, is to open a new diaper and lay it under baby before beginning to unfasten the dirty diaper. After cleaning your baby, remove the dirty diaper and the new diaper is ready to be quickly fastened. This method avoids the possibility of a mess in those few precious seconds between switching old to new diaper and having additional clean up. Most importantly, it provides quick cover – parents of baby boys will gain a few precious seconds to enable securing the fresh diaper to avoid a “sprinkling”.
Tip #3 – Have a Secret Toy Stash
It is beyond useful to keep some small toys or fun baby items in the diaper bag that are new and unseen to your baby. This secret stash can amuse and amaze baby for a while to buy more time wherever you may be. Babies love new toys and are enthralled with some things – but not others – so a variety of textures, sounds, colors are best to keep your baby occupied. If there is a toy that is especially liked by your baby, keep it in the diaper bag only. Take it out when you need that secret weapon and your baby will look forward to his or her special toys when you are out and about.
Tip #4 – Know Your Baby’s “Window”
There is a phrase used in parenting that is referred to as “missing the window“. This happens when baby has been awake too long and now is overtired and overstimulated or has been getting hungry because it is almost time to eat. When you miss the window, there is no going back, so it will be harder than usual to soothe and appease your bundle of joy. Every age has a different window of time before meltdown, but with experience and observation, it can be predicted and usually avoided. As an example, if you are shopping and know it is almost nap time, be sure to close the stroller hood and recline baby so the right conditions for nap can be met. This trick is an important one and using a schedule helps out tremendously to transition smoothly throughout the day. It’s okay to miss the window sometimes, but life is easier for everyone if it does not occur routinely.
Tip #5 – Let’s Eat Early
One of the easiest simple baby care tricks to utilize when out doing errands or shopping is to feed your baby about fifteen minutes earlier than usual. There is plenty of stimulation and constant new experiences for a baby when out in the
world. Feeding time is comforting and one a baby realizes they are hungry or thirsty, they are hungry and thirsty immediately. Being in a new or different environment adds extra intensity. Feeding a little earlier than usual helps keep a calm temperament and avoids an upset baby in the middle of a shopping trip. Surprise your baby by getting everything ready a little sooner than expected, and hopefully, with a full belly, your baby will take a nice nap.
As a parent, anticipating and assessing the needs of your baby is a full-time job, and takes a lot of patience and creativity. Only experience will hint at what your baby needs, but some baby care tricks can make all the difference when navigating this tremendously rewarding journey.
