Suffragette DIY Coasters
Suffragette DIY Coasters to help us commemorate Women’s Equality Day. This day in history back in 1920 women had finally won the right to vote and the Suffrage movement had finally accomplished it’s goal. Finally women were going to be allowed the right to vote after the uphill battle of fighting for equal rights. After 72 years of countless suffrage protests, petitions, speeches, pamphlets, and nights spent in jail, on August 26, 1920, we finally had the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the victory of the Suffrage movement. Today, August 26, 2015 marks the 95th anniversary of this great win for women. Help celebrate Women’s Equality Day by making some of these adorable and useful DIY Suffragette Coasters.
To make these coasters you will need a few things, I had everything I needed on hand to make it, but if you have to buy some things it should still be under $5.
- Newspaper (to cover your work area and to cut newsprint out of)
- Suffragette Images I printed mine from Google
- Tiles (I bought mine at Menards but most home improvement stores have them)
- Modge Podge to seal the newsprint and the images
- Polyurethane Spray to seal the coasters
- Felt for the back of the coasters
- Glue Gun to attach the felt
- Scissors to cut with
- Ribbon: Purple for dignity and ability, green for hope and white for purity.
Now, here comes the fun part, but don’t worry it is really easy I promise. I started by covering our table with newspaper, then grabbed a coaster and traced around it to mark where I should cut the newsprint. I figured by putting newsprint behind the main picture it would make them look a little older. Then I used Modge Podge to attach the newspaper to the tile. Then set it aside to let it dry for a few minutes.
While it was drying I took the time to cut out the images I was going to place over the newspaper. Then put them onto the coasters and covered them with another layer of Modge Podge. Then sat them to the side to drive over night. Once they were dry I took them outside to spray with with Polyurethane Spray and let them dry for a few hours in the sunlight.
After they are dry you can bring them back inside and cover the backs with felt. I covered all of the tile back with felt because I didn’t want my furniture tore up, but sometimes I just do 4 one inch squares in the corners. After that I tied ribbons around the 4 coasters in each set so I had a jump start on wrapping for presents!
