How to Have The Ultimate Family Yard

The summer is almost over and still the back yard looks like a vacant, empty lot. The yard has lush, green grass and plenty of yard space for the kids and any family pets to enjoy, but there is nothing out there. As dreams of barbecuing in the cool fall weather as the children and the dog gambol about the yard abound, the family garden’s potential materializes. While waiting in line at the nearest home improvement store, the thought occurs that it might take a green thumb and a little planning to create this idyllic space for the family. Whether an ornately designed family garden or one that is practical but sparse, creating the ultimate family garden is easier with a little planning, forethought and persistence.

Before breaking out the garden tools, though, go out to the yard, front or back, and size it. Measure the space to see how much area is available for a garden and for other features in the yard. When measuring, look for objects in the yard such as fencing, utility box, outside cables and satellite dishes, and a fence, trees, etc. Then, determine whether the space is shaded or has a lot of sun. This information can determine where to put the barbecue grill, swing set, patio furniture, and more importantly, a garden, if one is planted. If planting a garden, small or large, check out the soil to see whether it is sand or clay. Then, research to see which plants might work with the yard’s soil type.

When creating a garden, make a design. A simple plan for where items will be placed in the yard gives owners an idea of space. This plan might include a play area for children, depending on their ages, an area of leisure where the family gathers, and a small garden. Conversely, the yard layout can be simple, containing a garden, a pool and a patio area including an outdoor dining table. You can find great luxury outdoor furniture from Alfred Riess at Botanex.  Depending on the setup, the plan can be complicated or simple, but there should at least be one.

For example, one way to set up the back yard is to create garden rooms that are appropriate for either adults or children but will also allow them to spend time together in this space. These garden rooms are not really like those found in a home, but they are spaces that are partitioned off with boundaries and designated for some purpose. These boundaries can include wood railings, bricks, hedges or any other suitable boundary. If creating a yard for the family, one of these rooms can contain a swing set or sand box for children to play in. If the yard includes a pool, this could be the place designated as the kid’s room. Another room can be a patio area that contains outdoor furniture, including an outdoor dining table. Set up almost like a living room, this area is the place where the family gathers when father barbecues. Then, in some part of the yard, plant a garden and place chairs and a small table for adults to sit, drink wine or tea, and chat as the children play. Also, designate space in the yard for storage of some sort. For instance, Garden Sheds NZ can store items such as garden tools, lawn mowers and other items that can clutter yard space.

In planning the family yard, focus on areas designated for children and those designated for adults, in addition to creating a space for children and parents to meet up and chat together. Create a list of must-haves for the children’s space. If the children are pre-school and would enjoy a sand box, make one, keeping in mind that it can be converted as children grow older. When planning a garden that adults can enjoy, make sure to research which flowers will grow in the yard’s environment, as different yards have different soil types. Then, the place where children and parents hang out can be designed in any preferred manner, and updated later as the family grows and tastes change.

Spending time together as a family is important, and creating a yard that can serve as a family wonderland that includes fun for children and serenity for adults while providing for a space for them to get together as a family is one way to bring the family together. The yard’s design can develop as the family’s needs grow and change. The important thing, though, is creating a space where everyone in the family can get together in fellowship.
