Understanding Photography Software Licensing

Technology

Photographers rely heavily on the software systems they use to perfect their work. The companies which produce these systems know this, and charge for their use appropriately. To protect the images and the platform you use to tinker with them on, a licensing agreement is a common tool. Correctly outlined terms of use make things easier for everyone, but it also means that budding photographers must make sure they are doing due diligence to compliance.

What is a photography software license?

A photography software license is a legal document which outlines the agreement between the vendor and the purveyor. This document tells you things like how many times you may use the work and in what way. It sets out the rights and responsibilities of each party. In the case of the photography license, it governs the software you may use to edit, publish, or enhance your images.

The world of photography has countless licenses that the photographer must concern themselves with. From software licenses for using programs like Adobe Lightbox, to image licenses to give others permission to use your work, everywhere you turn there are licenses. Each piece of new software that a photographer depends on for their work comes with their own rates and fees. Often, these fees are set out in the software license – an agreement and understanding between parties over what you can and cannot do with the technology you create with.

Which Software Programs do Photographers Use?

A great example of a program and service agreement photographers and their software systems use is that of Adobe Lightbox. In a survey of over 600 professional photographers, 58% were found to use Adobe Lightbox. The main reason they gave was lighting, but the second reason was ease of use. Other programs helpful to photographers include:

  • Photoshop – the number one tool among non-photographers for editing images.
  • Capture One – a pro editing tool used for epic color corrections.
  • Skylum Luminar – this popular software for photographers uses an Ai tool to enhance the images.
  • PhotoLab – which is great for sharpening.

What does a Photography Software License include?

Although the individual photography software licenses used by common providers change from one to another, the basics of what the document outlines are usually the same. The contents might include the following common themes.

  1. The number of times you can use the image. For example, you might be doing commercials featuring a borrowed image. The software licensing agreement would protect the image by limiting the number of runs.
  2. Usage restrictions – your software licensing might allow you to borrow the image for an ad, but not to use it on your branded materials.
  3. Access to technical support and how often you have it.
  4. Access to upgrades and the newest tech.
  5. Photography Software Licensing will also deal in Intellectual property rights.

Do you have the correct licensing in place?

If you don’t strike the t’s and dot the I’s, you might not have a viable product – nor a legal one. Always keep your licenses up to date and don’t risk harming your business and reputation by doing otherwise.
