Used Car Shopping Tips

Used Car Shopping Tips

Buying a used car is something that most of us will have to do in our lifetime. But before you buy the first thing you find you should probably do your homework before paying for it. We shop used cars for a variety of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is that we can pay cash for them and not have to borrow the money. While we have been known to borrow the money in the past, now days we try to save up enough cash to pay for it so we don’t have to break the bank getting a new to us vehicle. But with that being said, our family car is starting to look a little rough but it still is mechanically sound. So trading it in wouldn’t benefit us so for right now we are shopping around to find the perfect vehicle for us.

Used Car Shopping Tips

When we decide to purchase a vehicle there are a few things that we insist on. For example, it must have air conditioning, I HATE getting all wind blown when I have to go somewhere. Ideally, the air conditioning works just as well as the heater and vice versa depending on the season we are in. But both are equally important but Air bags are one of the safety features that we have to have in our vehicle.

The new to us vehicle has to have room to allow us to wiggle too! We always make sure the vehicle we are test driving allows enough room for us all with room for guests. But equally as important as wiggle room is storage and grocery space. There are a few things that live in my vehicle and I want there to be plenty of room for groceries on top of things that live in there.

A radio is a must for our vehicle but most importantly it has to be mechanically sound. There can’t be any weird sounds when we test drive it, Mr. SMSL gives it a once over under the hood. We try to find a newer vehicle that is under $5,000 with less than 125,000 miles. But we don’t always get everything we want, we do try our best. Newer tires on the vehicle always receives a plus one, as does clean interior. But for the most part if you are buying used you will have to come up with features that are must haves for your family. Make your new to you vehicle work for you and be sure it is safe, well maintained, and ready to drive. If you need more help check out these safety tips to help you purchase a safe used vehicle

I like that you pointed out the importance of doing research before going to buy a used car. it’s important to figure out exactly what features you’ll want in a used car so you can better narrow down your choices. In your case, air conditioning and a working radio were important, but other people can stand to forgo those features. I’d probably want air conditioning in any car I got as well, and I’d want the car to be an automatic. Thanks for the article.

OMG! Luckily, I am intending to buy a used car but I don’t know how to buy the right one. Thanks to your post, I believe that I can apply these tips to opt for the most appropriate car, Heidi

When you buy used cars, it is indeed important to consider all the things that you have to have vs would be nice. I agree with you that I have to have air conditioning. The heater isn’t as important to me, but the AC has to work or I won’t buy it. I’m one of those people that can withstand the cold just fine, but my body doesn’t know what to do with to much heat.

The bottom line for me, similar to what you remarked, is that a used car works for me, has been well maintained and ready to drive. Tires are nice, but it has to not make any weird sounds, and that’s about it. Thanks for the tips though! I’m looking to buy soon and this was a great reminder of the things that I need to be looking for .

Great advice for finding the perfect used car. I will definitely consider this before making a purchase. Thanks so much for sharing.

I agree that being able to pay cash for a car makes buying used well worth the tradeoff. The “must haves” for our vehicles are very similar to yours, actually. One must have, though, is enough height in the car for my tall husband. He is just tall enough that he sometimes has to recline his seat to fit into some cars. I don’t want him to ever have to do that in his own car!

I like that you save money to pay cash instead of borrowing! That’s something we are trying to do, and we are really just hoping our minivan makes it until we have the cash saved up that we need. Thanks for sharing your tips because I feel like they will help us as we start looking at buying!

These tips are perfect for shopping for a used car! You should definitely come up with the features that you couldn’t live without and go from there with your budget. Thanks so much for sharing!
